that 4 letter S word will be here sooner than we think.  Usually first measurable snowfall is week after Thanksgiving here which is 2nd week of deer hunting I believe.  It has come earlier, but not usually and if it does, it melts the next day.

I do predict though a higher snowfall year and colder winter as well, but with global warming and all, you never know.   The older I get, the less I like snow. It does not bother me, but with age comes laziness shoveling the stuff not as enjoyable as it use to be for exercise.   I can take the brutal cold better than 90% of other people since have tons of insulation to spare as well having ice fished Devils lake ND some years ago in --15 degree temps and -35 or so below windchill and survived out on the ice just barely though my eyelids were freezing shut NO JOKE.  I learned to utilize ski googles for not only wind/cold protection, but for sun protection as well.

Amen - the nice thing about NC was usually not much snow ( but 20" blizzards were possible when everything worked right). KC certainly gets more snow than Raleigh. OTOH, KC drivers handle it better.

It's the experience factor.   And although I was reared in KS, I had a high school teacher transplanted from Michigan that swore Kansans didn't know how to drive on snow.   So, it's all relative.

Edited: Oh Yeah, forgot to mention being prepared with the correct tires/chains and maybe a bag of cat liter, small snow shovel and even maybe a survival meal or two.    There's a reason I never had a weather problem when I was transporting, being prepared for un-forecasted conditions makes a big difference in getting there safely and not getting there.   Of course, there's always the "wait till it clears  up" option.

Being raised in N. Illinois and S. Wisconsin you either learned to drive in winter or stay home 4 or 5 months of the year. Dad and Mom both thought their spawn Needed to Know how to operate a manual transmission year round. NOT bragging but pick a weather condition in Any of the lower 48 and chances are I've driven in those weather conditions. But when some folks transplant for what ever reason they may Not understand some of the weather patterns in their new to them area. And please Trust Me when I relate to you-Bad Driveres are EVERYWHERE. These days when I travel I prefer to NOT travel on weekends or during "rush hour"! And should snow or ice or heavy rain be in the forecast I either don't go anywhere or pull over SAFELY fefr a cup of coffe and let the Heavy Bad crap blow on thru. And having been in the mountains in winter I'm here to tell ya You Can go as fast as you want on icy snowy wet slick roads. THE trick shot be curves and stopping when you REALLY Need to STOP! After several million Safe miles in an 18 wheeler I KNOW when to git off the road and away frome Any menace. RIDE SAFE.

It was projected that we could get snow at town level last night.   Nope, they were wrong, just rain.  But have had several snows on the Cascades range in the last week or so.   We do need snow, in the high country, lots of it.  Drought is not a good thing.   Not sure if we'll get it or not.

Tried to work out with the "power to be", that it would only snow at the 5000' foot level and above.  Our house is around 4500' feet.   But so far have not had much success in the past.

Finally got our new HVAC installed yesterday.  So ready for the winter, when and if comes.

Well put. I too have been in just about any weather conditions you can think of in the lower 48, most with a manual transmission, NONE with a 4WD. Even some exceptionally heavy rain (as in cars pulling over) in VA and NC on a Motorcycle. DOn't have much bad weather in the mountains experiance, but probably lucky that I haven't needed to be in mountain snow so far. I HAVE driven in Boston in the snow (quite an experiance considering most drivers there). The National Capital area thinks they are a Southern metro area, especially when it snows.

I was one that loved winter. The worse the better. Being brought up in the auto business I loved blizzard service/tow calls. We built a rig to swing out and jerk vehicles up and out of the local lake [ a south storm would ice coat that state road]. As a early-teen I was the one dragging chains into the water and hooking things up.  I've spent nights in the Adirondacks when the record of -52F was set, etc.  loved it.

Well, no more !  Snow and cold are 4 letter words to me. After the treatments, even 70F has me in a sweatshirt even 5 yrs later.

Been trying to sell this house all summer so we can move south full time. We have an ass for a real estate agent. I'm fed up with NYS politics too.

Was born & raised in Iowa, learned to drive a stick from the beginning(no automatics on tractors). After boot camp in Texas, every station I was assigned to for the next 6 yrs. in the USAF were north, further north, and waay north. I finally migrated to Florida for 53 years, what a relief. Then, life did an about face & I ended up in Wisconsin on Aug. 24, 2019...probably for the rest of my days. So, my introduction to Wisconsin that first winter was two snowfalls in October before Halloween...and they didn't dissipate quickly. Last year, 2020, was a bit later. This year, so far nothing but rain...which beats the heck out of snow. I don't look forward to winter these days, at my age it makes daily life more difficult...more uncomfortable. But...each new day is a gift and I'll take it along with whatever crosses my path and be thankful.  cooldude

I grew up in Northeast OK, not much snow in my young driving life there.   But have lived in the high country of AZ, 50 mile south of International falls, OR twice, and WY.   Have had a lot of experience in driving on snow packed roads during that time.   I worked for the Gov, so most of the vehicles were standard trans 4X4 pickups.   Which over the years transitioned into auto trans.  I put on 50K or more a year for 30 years driving in all sorts of bad/good weather.   Only was off the road once due to the ice/snowpack.  I was able to drive out of the ditch once the snow cloud stopped.   2funny

Thankfully now when the roads are bad, I just stay at home (even thou both our 4 wheel vehicles are 4X4).

I grew up in Iowa. I remember when my dad got me a honda 50cc at age 10 and on Christmas day it was 5 above zero and 8 inches of snow but that did not stop me. Rode all the time in the winter.

Lots of experience snow driving, lived in & ran a snowplow business in WI for years.  My vehicles were all manual trannies - way better control and capability both in & out of snow conditions, 4 and 2wd. Not pleased that now our vehicles are automatics but are 4wd.  Of course they have computerized traction control but that doesn't thrill me.  I still feel way better in control with a stick and clutch.  Not to mention much simpler and less to break. And better mileage; more capability when it's really slippery and deep snow, and marginal conditions where a manual can get you unstuck with a rocking rythem.  Can't do that with an automatic.

I’m not a big fan of snow. We get our share but it’s usually not around long. I also realize it is an important water source for a great deal of the country so there is that. What is becoming much more troublesome for Kentucky is freezing rain. Enough of that and all your driving skills are out the window. We had one episode this past winter that delivered over an inch of freezing rain with a little wind thrown in for go measure. I ended up with about a 6” thick glacier of ice at my back door. I had to use a pickaxe to break it up.

Snow can be fun, freezing rain, no way.

Amen. Freezing rain was always worse than snow in NC - going out in freezing rain is only for absolute emergencies, IMO.

Several times in the house we have been in for 4 decades we have had to wait several days, one time in 1992 for 7 days until they got the road open. Because of the hill our house is on the snow drifts across the road at times are over 20ft high.
