I'm pretty familiar with the old girl since I do all of my own work and bought my first one in 98. Between my wife (01-IS,3 VTX 18'S) and me (98,99,00 Tourers) we've made close to 400k miles on Valks alone . I Spent a bit of time looking through a few posts for a complete carb, fuel rail rebuild, parts list. I did find the post off youtube to gain more knowledge on the disassembly of the carb. D-ray is good too. So can someone who has recently done a full rebuild let me know what to order. Red eye for sure but what parts or kits.
Spring job. But We're heading down to Arizona and it will be easier to get parts sent there than back to Canada.
Any advice is welcome
Warren

When I drained the carbs for storage this is what was in the bottom of the bowls from this years riding. Didnt want to idle smooth all summer and seemed to get worse as time went on. So new slow jets for sure. While I'm in there are mains a good idea? She runs good up top though.

I have used the allballs kit. Comes with most everything. Also upgrade the float needles to 18-8955 (stronger springs) less chance of hydro lock. Any other o-rings I use red eyes products. Would also recommend replacing the in tank fuel filter. So far I have had good luck with all of it.

[quote author=longrider So can someone who has recently done a full rebuild let me know what to order. Red eye for sure but what parts or kits. Warren, You need the following from Redeye: -Valkyrie Carburetor Gasket Kit (minus the Bowl Gaskets) -Valkyrie Bowl Gasket Kit If you do not already have Viton intake O-rings, you can get them from Redeye also. -Valkyrie Intake O-ring Kit and if your vacuum caps are old and cracking -Valkyrie Vacuum Cap Kit If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, you can clean the jets. it is a good idea to soak them for a bit in carb cleaner before US cleaning. I use Simple Green Aircraft cleaner in my US. It is made for aluminum. If you do not have an ultrasonic cleaner, it's not a bad idea to buy new jets, at least the slow jets. I get jets from https://www.jetsrus.com/-Slow jets are $6.35 each, and Main jets are $6.09 each I very strongly recommend replacing the bowl float needle valves. you can get them from Jets R Us also. Either $5.75 each, or $8.99 each, depending on which ones you like. I have no affiliation with either of the above vendors. I just use their parts. Redeye has what I consider to be the best rebuild kits. Jets R Us has OEM jets and quality components. I am leery of cheap components that might not be as quality as the Keihin original components. Anyhoo, that's my opinion. Someone else may have a different one. Dave

Thanks Dave. I've had this valk since 2015. This motorcycle has been in service since April 1 this year as it is stored for the winter. To my knowledge only has an idle issue. I was not able to sync the carbs as she wanted to die if I got anywhere near balanced vacuum. I need to change the fuel rail o-rings as they have been leaking each spring for a few hours. So I'll go through everything. Will I need to order new d screws sets as well?
thanks warren

I usually don't see a need to change the screws. I use a good JIS standard screwdriver so I dont bug up the heads. Even the JIS screwdriver in your Honda tool kit is JIS. There is a phenomenom where the galvanized coating of the screws migrates off onto the carbs due to some galvanic action or something, but I usually just reuse them.

DO NOT USE THE D-Ray procedure for carb overhauls. If I remember correctly he doesn't disassemble carbs completely. To properly rebuild Valkyrie carbs they must be removed from the bank and completely disassembled. If you just remove the covers and blow out the passages you can and likely will destroy the air cut valves. It's the little black diaphragm valve mounted to the side if each carb. They are between 55 and 75 bucks EACH.
Like was said the Redeye kits are great. They have every part you'll need to rebuild the carbs properly. JetsRus is a great place to get jets. Replace the float needles with K&L parts. If your bike is having any running issues especially at idle don't bother trying to clean the slow jets just get new. If you have aftermarket exhaust upgrade your jets to #38 pilots and #105 mains. Hope this is helpful to you.

Thanks again. I will order parts as you have mentioned. I do not have a ultrasonic but was talking to MSB yesterday and if I drive a few hours I can have the carbs cleaned and then reassemble.

Well Carb rebuild is done although not yet in the bike. When I purchased it in Las Vegas the original owner said nothing had been done to the bike except routine maintenance. He had an attitude the day I picked it up. Now it ran alright for 75K but the last couple years I just couldn't get the idle right even after a sync. Wifes IS had a bit more power but not all are equal and I said "oh well" Carb #1 told me that someone was into this bike before. Did 1,3,5,2,6, then #4 because it woudn't sync anymore and I was sure something was not right in there. Amazing it even lifted the diaphragm at all. Maybe it'll run a bit better.

How is it supposed to look, flat? I see the seal is not in the grove on those bottom 2 holes, I would think it was leaking.

yes the formed seal on the bottom of the pic was not installed correctly and the cap pinched and distorted it until it cracked. Bike is running and needs a carb sync but it should be fine.

So I guess inquiring minds want to know, exactly what is the debris in the photo and where did it come from? Contaminated fuel at the pump? Rust in the gas tank of the bike? It has the immediate appearance of rust. Leaving alcohol fuel in the bike over many months or years of storage will draw water which will accumulate in the bowels causing a white corrosion, but one winter is sort of a short time period to see it. Any idea what it is?
The Redeye kit is as of yesterday, still on "hold". I inquired to the "contact us" link when it might again be available. No reply as of today. Why do so many recommend the Redeye kit VS the All Balls kit on Amazon for $107.00. It looks like the All Balls kit has more stuff for just a few dollars more and it's immediately available.

There was some oily residue/dirt outside of the formed o-ring gasket on the cast aluminum but that is all. Surrounding the vacuum ports the formed o-ring has been installed incorrectly by someone who rebuilt the carbs in the past.
I was advised to purchase the carb rebuild Kit off of ebay. But as not all parts are the same quality I was told to also use K&L fuel inlet needles and slows jets instead of using the ebay ones. I was able to buy the fuel and air rail viton orings kit from redeye.
After sync on the cabs she is running smooth. I have the new diaphragm in the photo on order from the USA. Here in Canada we are still so far behind the rest of the world with Trudeau killing our economy that no parts would be available now and the order would not be filled until at least July if then.

I have no experience with Red Eye but I can tell you the All Balls has every o-ring & jet needle needed to do a rebuild of the carbs and fuel rails. If I recall correctly Red Eye sells separate packages for different sections so you need to make sure what you need is in the kit you order. I've used 2 All Balls kits and I was very pleased with them. As to longevity I'm unsure as I'm only on the 2nd year of running the All Balls kits. I know one member had replied to a post of mine previously that had used both Red Eye and All Balls and he didn't like that All Balls kit o-rings comes unsorted (all in one bag) whereas Red Eye has them sorted and labeled in individual bags and perhaps with instructions for each.

Well, Biden is putting the last pistol shots into the head of our economy too. Let's hope the masses who support these liberal fascist little dictator wanna be's all get tossed out the next time. Liked him or not... Trump gave us the best economy and job numbers in my 66 year memory. Not to mention, reasonable energy costs and low inflation. But he had a tendency to call things what they were and he screwed with the elites and their deal. I miss him a lot. The current crop are just plain corrupt and evil. I hope there's a special place in hell for them.

I rebuilt mine in 20. I used this you tube channel. He has the most comprehensive videos on YouTube on rebuilding the carburetors. I did the desmog kit when I did mine. https://youtu.be/h8XC7Q75vsA
