This is a song by Bob Seger. I/we hear it more less nightly as we shift from one TV entertainment subject to another. (news to British Crime Series on Britbox). When I hear it I wonder if I was raised like that. Did I have the convictions I should have had as I grew up. Was I "like a rock". I don't know. We are all blinded by our personal beliefs and prejudices such that others might well know us better than our selves. I tried to stand straight and tall. I tried to defend others when needed. Anyway, just thought I'd start a thread about songs that meant something to each of us. Bob Segar is one of the artist that I like all of his song. One of his songs that makes me reflect on life is Against the wind.

I was born in North Carolina but raised and came of age in South Carolina. Barnwell, (house where we use to live in now inside the Savanah River Project boundires), rural Saluda, and came of age in Myrtle Beach in the late 50's early 60's. I'd not trade for any thing else.

Close to the same for me. Born in Georgia. Raised and came of age in Blacksburg South Carolina. Then up to North Carolina. Up one state at a time. My voyage north ended in 1981 with my arrival in here in Hickory. |

Hello In There... https://youtu.be/OVhA01J0ZsgI discovered John Prine in the mid 70's on my then rare FM Radio in my '73 Plymouth Satellite. This was one of his songs that the one FM station I could get played a lot. Even as a youngster, I always seemed to gravitate to and enjoy talking to older folks in their 60's, 70's and plus....even complete strangers. I found that they were usually more than willing to engage a young kid who seemed interested in talking to them, and so this song just hit home with me right of the bat then. I've been listening to it and playing/singing it for over 45 years, and now as an older folk myself with my kids and grandkids living away in different parts of the Province, it still hits close to home with me...but now from the opposite end of the spectrum. |

Paul, Your "background" always amazes me. It means you have experienced things that most of us never will. With that experience comes understanding. Difficult to get from just books. We found, in roaming through YouTube videos, this group of ladies. I find them remarkable for several reasons. They are talented, when they are live its real. They seem to truly enjoy what that do. And the fiddler, wellll.... This song, I believe is about someone going to sea. As a sailor it is reasonable. Rather than telling the sailor to please don't leave the lady tells him to go. I like that one as well. It tells a story. A real story. I have head the version by Willie Nelson more often.
Funny thing, I do have XM/Sirius on my bike but when I am not listening to a book via the Garmin GPS, I listen to songs I have stored on a flash drive interfaced to the system.
We add songs to it as we find them while listening at home most are 60's - 70's but...... some are more recent.

One of the best songs ever written, by the late & great Steve Goodman. As you say, the perfect road trip song. Another of my favorites in a similar vein is this classic from Moe Bandy, which actually gets more and more relevant, especially these days and to a small town boy.
