I have been searching the forum for anything related to removal of the stock 12" tips on a tourer. I bought a 36" length of 4" OD chrome truck stack that I will cut in half to replace my stock tips. My question is, how to get the stock tips off. If it is as simple as removing the screws and sliding off, then I apologize for this post. But if (and I suspect it is) it is more involved, then please let me know. I do not intend to alter the piggies and hope I can slide the new chrome tube over them. I don't want to change the sound, just the look.

Unscrew and remove is it. If you want to remove the chrome covers forward of the tips, those are standard worm gear clamps.

There's 3, ...6mm screws on each tip.....remove them and slide off the tips....easy stuff.. We should get together and compare Valk notes......I'm in Miamisburg....

It's possible after being on there 20 years, the soot and crud will make them hard to yank off.
Avoid the framing hammer.
If stuck, a soft strap wrench and some back and forth tugging should do it.

And spray some WD-40 or equivalent in the seam.

Paint the edge after you cut it with high heat paint, or it will rust.

I replaced my stock tips with 18" AirFlow flatcuts (now gone, I think). Also 4" OD.
I spent a long time making a cardboard mock-up and carefully measuring the 3 holes, dimpling the stacks then drilling the holes (small to large; 1/8" to 1/4", I think), then matching the hole locations up for the screws.
They were a very tight fit (tighter than the OE tips). Even after cleaning the pipes very well, and with bar soap as lubricant (better and less flammable and smokable than oil), I had to hammer them on (gently), using a piece of soft pine to protect the chromed edges.
On reflection, I probably only needed to drill one hole and use one bolt to hold them on, not all three. (And I'd place that one hole and bolt head on the inside, out of sight.) I'd start out with one hole only and then see how tight your fit-up is; you can add more holes if you need them.
Also, should you get a hole a tad too long or short for a perfect match-up between tips and pipes, all you have to do is elongate the hole a little with the drill bit, the flange bolt(s) will cover it from sight.
The only other thing is the flat cut Air Flows (or your cut stacks) being round have less clearance than the pinched-end OE tips. I have slightly drug my tip ends a few times (at 6 o'clock) leaning the bike entering or departing steep concrete aprons to parking lots or gas stations and such. And a bit more care must be exercised backing down on curbs. It's easy to back in with both pipe tips over the curb, but then laying the low side tip on the curb top when leaning the bike over on the side stand. And some curbs are high enough neither pipe will clear, even with the bike level.

Happens with the stock pipes too. Don't ask how I know.

Thanks Jess, and everyone else. I had extra long pipes on that I switched out for stock so am familiar with curbs--haha. If I need to I can make them shorter than 18". The stock tips are 12" and they do not clear the bottom of the bags which is what I want to do.
Love to find a set of Grumpy's tips. I had on my other pipes, but alas, now he is over the rainbow. Are you aware of anyone else making them?

I prefer the exhaust just clearing the bags by an inch or two (for soot and for noise).
I do not care about my few rubs, and just slow down (and lean less) on tight aprons.

Got my new turn down tips installed. Getting the stock tips off was a piece of cake. Slipped off easily once the three bolts were removed. I would like to post a photo, but can't get photostash to cooperate. Maybe I can do on the facebook page.

Photos came out larger than expected but look good. I was trying to decide if I should mount them to exit out the side or down, and ultimately decided on down. I bought the tips on Amazon for $30 each. They have an allen bolt on top to squeeze the end together around the stock exhaust. I used just one of the bolts from the stock exhaust to make sure they don't fall off, but they seem pretty snug after wrenching down the allen bolt. I did not alter the piggies and there seems to be plenty of room. Stock is 12", these are 15".

Clearance from scuffing may be slightly better aimed out, but noise will be reduced from aiming down.
With all the piggies intact, noise should be minimal either way.

Right Jess. I didn't want louder. I had loud pipes before, now my son has them. We may put the stock tips on his bike. He has SS exhaust that extend about 6" past the bags and make it very difficult to use a trailer.
