Long On Longing...

Yep, I'm passing time again... Twiddling my thumbs has never held much appeal for this rider who misses his calling very much at the moment! Neither has staring at the mind-numbing box known variously as a boob-tube, picture box, or television. Writing is as close, I suppose, as I can actually come to riding without actually depressing a starter button.

It does have the decided advantage of stimulating the imagination, vicariously titillating the senses, and inducing the conjuring up of images of distant mind-blowing settings that brought me as near to euphoria as... Well, it does prove useful, particularly at times like these. We're holed-up in a motel in Montgomery, AL... still. Approaching a week now, and if you had any doubts, yes, it is getting a bit old!

Oh, I do have plans! Yessiree, and those include lots of pavement time aboard our girl. Only thing is, those plans are still at least two days off... if things don't turn even nastier! Dang!!! Time to use this 'vehicle' to see if perhaps I can turn my attitude around... This downward spiral has to be curtailed and more positive thoughts have to replace the gloomy ones now swirling around in my noggin'...

YES! I just had a flash of sunny skies, low traffic, scenic back roads, and the sweet purr of our girl transporting this smiling gypsy to some as yet undetermined place down the road in an as yet unknown state or province... Mississippi? Florida? Louisiana? Alberta? Who knows, and more importantly, who cares?! It's all good, and I'm eager to go in search of whatever might come into view...

Yeah, that's the ticket! It seems to be working, too... I'm feeling much better already, and my spirits are most definitely on a higher plane than they were just a few minutes ago when I first started this piece... Our Creator does love us, and He/She has been particularly generous with this unworthy character! Dang! If I were still a drinking man, I'd be tempted to go find some brews and wings and things right now to celebrate...

Just don't head north. The ground is no longer in view...covered with some white crap, and it was 2 degrees at 0800. And to make me feel even "better" I have a nasty cold, my nose is beginning to look like Rudolph's. So, guess I'll hole up a couple more days, maybe watch the Packers beat the Vikings this evening...hopefully. Gives me a chance to razz a couple cousins in Austin, MN. Wink

I was going to say, Bruce...you need a hobby...to get you through these times. Especially these days, TV is certainly no alternative when waiting on conditions such as weather or other interruptions to resolve themselves in a way that allows one to do what they're meant to do. It can actually be detrimental to one's well being I believe....especially spiritual well being, if one gets sucked into its  neverending, mostly negative messaging. Actually "doing" rather  than watching other people "doing" makes much more sense...your chosen lifestyle being a perfect example of this.

But, then I realized you do have a "hobby", which is of course writing  about not only your continuing life on the road adventure , but also these little ditties where you manage to put into words and share what many others are feeling and thinking at times. When I get to missing being on the road  especially during our Winter months, I have several other lifelong passions (hobbies) that time spent doing provide similar satisfactions to the feeling I get when riding....it appears as if your "hobby" of putting your thoughts into written form and sharing with us, has done the same for you in this particular instance cooldude
But then, you already know this, don't ya Wink

John, the red nose rider...

Quite a visual there... Unfortunately, I'm familiar with that look... even sported it myself on occasion! No white stuff here, but... pretty doggone cold and blustery for this tenderfoot. No rain or other moisturefication in these parts, but I'm still toying with the idea of hanging around one more night in this dungeon...

The desire to escape is strong; however, my constitution is nowhere near as able as it has been in years past! OK, more like my sissy, self-indulgent side is trying to assert itself, too... Sports spectacles have long since lost their appeal, so I might have to play around with yet another workout on the keyboard... Appears we may both be stuck... At least in my case, that would be only for one more night, though! Good luck with your confinement!!!

Mike,

Yeah, hobbies are quite important, yet their value is often missed by many of us hard-charging eager-beavers trying to get ahead! Some, just like yours truly once upon a time, become so focused and 'dialed-in' on specific targets, we get all caught-up in what my fighter pilot friends called 'target fixation'. We simply block out anything else and go dead at whatever it is that we're shooting for...

My ex and former landlady understood that, and when she recognized that condition in this over-doing-it partner of hers, she encouraged me to find outlets and other avenues of pursuit. What followed worked wonders and changed my life! Just one example of the many, many ways in which she made my life so much better than it would have been without her...

You are correct, writing has become an important 'hobby' of mine! Not a lot of aerobic value there, but mentally it is really very stimulative... Of course, you know that, too, don't you? Nobody gets to a skill level like the one you have in writing yourself without far more than casual, occasional pursuit! Thanks, as always, for your comments!

Ron,

Not so fast there, my impetuous friend! There are plans and then there are plans... My definition of a plan is little more than an inclination to likely do something... generally speaking! Most folks think of lots of detail and other such stuff when that term is applied! For this 'planner', that term means little more than saying I also 'plan' to eat, breathe, sleep, and... well, ride...

As for 'Hell freezing over', I don't know about that, but it is possible, I think! Heck, it's so cold here in Montgomery this morning, I'm actually considering voluntarily staying over yet another night right here! It's 35* with winds of 15mph, cloudy and dismal looking... Yeah, I know... We used to enjoy mild days like that back in the day... I'm like everybody else there, I reckon... the older I get, the better I was!

All,

I made my break and got 'er done! Yep, we hit the road and... It turned out to be a good ride, so I've written another story about it, therefore I won't go into detail here... Anyway, we're no longer hunkered down... at least not in Montgomery. Spending a few days with family and friends in Florida, then back to Montgomery... then... Dare I say it? I'm seriously considering a long-awaited coddiewomple! We'll see...
