That's always a tough one. Were they chasing him for something more than a minor traffic violation? Was he wanted for a "real" crime or just something silly?

I get you don't run, but there's also the fact that if they pursue for road pirate crimes only, they're not only putting the fleeing person at risk, they're putting innocent civilians at risk.

Tough call either way.

Stupid hurts for a millisecond. Being the bike was stolen, the rider was going to run with any interaction with LE. Rider made a choice, now his family has to live with the consequences of his/ her actions. I wonder if the family will be looking for a payday.

According to the article, the bike was stolen and police weren't pursuing him, they had elected to watch him from helicopter.

accidents happen but this could've been avoided if the guy stealing the cycle never stole it in the 1st place.  This spring saw a left turn vehicle pull in front of a harley davidson going in opposite direction with me so close behind cyclists with windows open heard the cyclists yell FU.... never got the full word out and BANG at 35 mph hit the vehicle right side front door coming to a STOP ASAP and 250lb. dude flipped over SUV roof landing badly passing that following week in the hospital.  I think he might have made it if had a helmet (maybe?) since I could see blood coming from his head onto road.    Head on swivel, but once again,  this could have been avoided if both SUV and cyclists STOPPED light turning red vs. both speeding up going on thru intersection right in middle of intersection as stop light turned red.  Me being in car or on cycle I would have stopped not ran the light at his moment had plenty of time to stop.

Tough call, Yes.   But, Forrest Gump's mama was right, Stupid is as Stupid does.   Hard for me to feel any sympathy for someone running from the law.   I assure you, I've paid my fair share of tickets.

Quote
The unidentified cyclist was clocked at as high as 130 mph down Roscoe Boulevard in West Hills, Calif., at about 1 p.m. Thursday before slamming head-on into a vehicle making a left turn,

But, in this case, the only police pursuit was by the police helicopter not by LEOs on the ground according to the posted article.  I sincerely doubt he was even aware the police helicopter was there.   I really don't like repeating myself but, Stupid is...............

That's why I pretty much follow the speed limit now .... maybe 5-10 MPH above when it's safe to do so.

That "rider" made a CHOICE. Turns out-video at 9-That CHOICE was WRONG. I Was NOT there but like they say on a sports cast-let's review that video tape. I NEVER trust turn indicators hand signals or Anyone waving me on-Yes even That L E O. Left turn in front of ya-ALWAYS Expect The UNEXPECTED. Another maxim I Still LIVE by-the average driver is not only less than average but can turn into a complete and utter dumb ass in less than a heart beat. And before anyone gits P Od at me-Recollect What I did to earn a living all those years. I've made mistakes But not Any that cost someone their life to my knowledge or even injury. Well to myself for sure. Far too many people in a hurry or their time is far more valuble than yours or mine.
Someone asked would the family of the deceased be lookin fer a payday. Any follow up I'd like to see bout that. I M O No/None/Nada/Zilch payday for the deceased. RIDE SAFE.

Sorry, this is textbook... play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The fact you successfully speed (triple limit) in city traffic for 10 minutes, doesn't make your chances of surviving get better, even though your confidence goes up.

It's just like playing Russian Roulette, though instead of blowing your brains out, you get to do an 80mph full twisting, double summy, broken bone and neck splatter.   (awesome spin technique but poor landing)

You do get your 5 minutes of fame on the interweb.

Happens to those not playing stupid games as well.

To me Aug 3, 1970.  Left turn female in a 1970 Buick Ghetto Sled.  I was doing 70 on my Ducati on Hwy 32 going north,  4 lane with median break for her.  Still a half mile out of town.  Totalled the bike AND HER BOAT, I hit the passenger front wheel, bent the car frame and penetrated my right knee with the wiper blade, bounced off the windshield and flew 60 yards or so down the road.  Caved in the steel gas tank with my ass which launched most of me over the hood.  Legs folded the bars forward.  Knocked out before any pain.  Woke up on the operating table.  The land yacht jumped sideways 10 ft or so and she said

"I THOUGHT I HIT A DOG.  HE CAME OUT OF NOWHERE."

No lady, I had my high beam on and you were SLEEP DRIVING.

If she had turned one second sooner I would have hit the roof line.  I was speeding but not excessive - limit was 55.

Broken leg & some road rash, that's it.  Have a spur inside my right ankle joint which prevents jogging, tennis etc; made problems in boot camp the following spring.  Lucked out.

Always assume you are invisible, they are trying to kill you and will do stupid moves.  This was before I learned that.

Yeah, I've lived by that "Assume you're invisible" for a long time now. Also don't be in a hurry unnecessarly, and if you have to be - exercise EXTRA caution.
