Very interesting career and history.  I had not heard of him before, that I remember but the name "Pug" seems to ring a bell or two.   Interesting he build the house you are in. 

I did something similar with the house we live in now.  Went to the local school, passed all the tests to get my contractors license but needed "X" months or "experience" to actual be awarded the document.  Oh, and watched a lot of Holmes on Homes.

Did the same thing to get R-12 for for my Ford Explore, got my Refrigerant Transition and Recovery" License.  Did not have an expiration date  Smiley
