I can recall as a child, maybe 3-4 yrs. old, my parents taking me to the RR yard in Omaha, NE. They had pedestrian bridges over the tracks and you could stand there as the locomotives passed underneath as they pulled out of the station. We used to get a kick out of being engulfed by the steam exhaust from the "chimneys" as they passed. I can remember being on dad's shoulders during this and he'd run from one track to the next so we could have another train pass under us. I always got a wave from the engineers, was a big deal to a liitle kid. I specifically remember us taking the Rock Island Rocket each summer during the war, going across the prairie from Omaha to Denver, then using a borrowed car to drive up to Boulder where dad was working on first his Masters then Phd. at the University of Colorado. I remember seeing one of the first Big Boy locomotives built for the Union Pacific, weighed over a million pounds. A monster of a machine and what a sound.

Years later dad left a school superintendent position in NW Iowa to take a classroom spot in the local Jr. Hi of Ft. Dodge, IA, claimed he did it due to me moving into my teenage years and felt he wanted to be more available. My folks bought a small new house only a block from the local RR tracks which was still being used by steamers. It had a slight incline and if it was pulling a long train, most of the time they couldn't make it past our place. I'll never forget in the middle of night I'd often be awakened by one of them giving a short toot-toot, the signal for a little push needed from the rear. I found out years later that the ever popular "weed" grew wild along the tracks.

I see the Union Pacific RR has restored engine #4014, one of the first 14 Big Boys built about 1941. I'd love to go see it in action, some great memories there. Here's a little video of it in operation after restoration. Go to about the 18 minute spot if you want to move past all the early stuff in the yard. It will take you to where the person filming is on the highway parallel to the train headed west across the plains. I find it fascinating.

Just noticed in that video there's a diesel locomotive a few cars back. It's not used for assisting in the pulling, it's for dynamic braking in the mountains...something the steamers didn't have.

John,

Those were great machines, although they had to be expensive to operate and maintain.  When I was stationed in Korea in 1976-77, they were still using steam locomotives but I'm sure they weren't Big Boys.  Thanks for sharing.

They periodically run a Big Boy between Denver & Cheyenne.  Alongside I-25.  Haven't seen it lately though.  There are a couple remnant excursion trains still running in S & SW Colorado - Rode them many times.  They go through the wilderness.  The Durango-Silverton, into the Needle Mountains wilderness - nothing to see back there that says it isn't 1885.  45 miles at 15mph, along the Rio de Los Animas Perdidas - River of Lost Souls.  It's like stepping back in time.  The Cumbres-Toltec and the Durango-Silverton.  They have also been used in a lot of movies.  Nice ride if you're a steam fan.  Rather spendy though, especially the DSNGRR.  Another one closer to Denver, the Georgetown Loop.  Interesting, but a short ride on a Shea locomotive pulled train. Another goes through the Royal Gorge but it's a 50's diesel.  And another, back side of Pike's Peak, between Cripple Creek and Victor in the gold fields.  Also diesel.

Walt Disney had his own miniature steam locomotive train, at his house.

John do you know there is a great train museum not far from your home in Green Bay.
They do have a big boy 4017 train on display.

Man oh man John have reawakened some memories of a LONG time ago. Dad took us a couple times to the rail yards in Chicago and while steam powered by coal was dying off there were still some to marvel at! Coal smoke and steam-once smelled you'll NEVER forget that.
The Only Big Boy-4-8-8-4-I ever saw and been next to was in the rail museum near Denver Colrado. I'm 6' 2" tall and the drive wheels Are ginormous! The entire locomotive puts big/large/huge to the test!
Some years back-I was still drivin big truck I was south of the D F W metro plex and saw a lot of vehicles parked along the hiway. And Many expensive cameras set up. Found a spot for my 18 wheeler and about the tim e I asked What was going on I heard that unmistakable mournful whistle. The ONLY time til now I'd ever seen a Big Boy-that 4 8 8 4-operating! The earth shook as it went by! And I did NOT have a camera or cell phone in my possesion!  Cry RIDE SAFE.

John,

Lots of recollection stimulus there! Last time I recall riding on a train pulled by one of those beasts was on a Valkyrie ride in Pennsylvania led by Shftr (a famous quote of his " ' "). Thanks for the memories...

That was the Transportation Museum in Roanoke.

http://www.vmt.org/

The 611 is housed there and still gets out for an excursion once in awhile.

I posted a pic of it here awhile back and one of our members had actually operated it.

There's another transportation museum in NC that is supposed to have an even better collection of trains.

Steam locomotives are really cool. Now combine a steam engine with a motorcycle and this is what you get:
