will not work, may help, but not much by lowering speed limits.
On same main hwy. thru our smaller town of 1000 the speed limit is 50 mph and have had a few accidents on cross streets leading into town and other county road. Pretty sure the speed limit will be lowered to 45 mph on the main 2 lane hwy. and I agree it should be lowered since although the county sheriff likes to sit there catching speeders doing over 60 mph, the speeders need to slow down since almost all do easily 55 mph in a 50 speed zone and IMO that is too fast. What irks me is the nearby town about 3000 people more heavily populated with businesses off same main 2 lane hwy the speed limit in town is ONLY 35 mph and is a total speed trap daily catch speeders doing 45 mph easily on the hwy.
Why on same exact road but less businesses off it can the speed limit vary so much 50 mph vs. only 35 mph? I have no issues with our town going to 45 mph vs. 50 mph since a few deaths have occurred with cross traffic pulling out from in town or the county road. 35 mph though in other city nearby is a tad bit too low should be 40 mph but luckily have never been ticketed since I am almost always at 39-40 mph or lower thru there knowing much over and will get a speeding ticket.
On interstates marked mostly 70 mph near me, everyone drives 79-80 mph anyways and the police never stop them for speeding if 10 over. It use to be always 65 mph for decades, so why change it to 70 knowing everyone drives near 80 mph anyways? Just me, but I think much over 80 mph on interstates is too fast and too dangerous knowing how people tailgate and not allow enough distance between vehicles. I have no issues in 90 percent of my roads with the speed limit being 55 mph but NO WAY can they put interstate speeds that low people will be getting MORE tickets right and left then, which will created millions more in revenue I guess?

I'm already wearing them, almost just like I did in the 60s. Only difference now that I'M in the 60s is the bell bottoms have moved from my pants to my shirts.

Just like EVERY idea that comes from the "WOKE" left, this one won't work either. It will also be the the first thing that gets repealed the minute a Republican is back in the Whitehouse. Lowering the speed limits alone will not achieve either goal. Also, many modern cars get less mpg's at 55 mph on the freeway than they do at 70 mph, so fuel consumption may actually increase. Of course they may have already thought of this and it is their plan to cause fuel consumption to rise so that fuel prices rise. Just another step to usher in EV's for everyone.

Here goes $5 BILLION out the proverbial window. SNIP Are we going back to a national 55MPH I don’t know, but from the sound of it achieving a ZERO fatality rate is going to be something to see that’s for sure.
Enjoy…there goes $5,000,000,000.00
I'm trying to figure out where you got the 55 mph thing. I read the article three times and didn't see highway speeds mentioned. This is from the article you linked to: The transportation secretary's plan to reach "zero roadway fatalities" is to spend $5 billion in grants and issue guidance encouraging cities to lower speed limits, adopt safer road design by creating dedicated bike and bus lanes, and improve street lighting and crosswalks. Rams Just speculation, that’s all. I’m sure all these deaths on the roads aren’t in just the cities and local roadways. Who know what the trans sec has in mind along w/ what the President decides would be a good idea. Maybe it was his idea back in the ‘70’s for the 55 MPH and thought it was a huge success. $5B that’s a lot of scratch, they may want their money’s worth, who knows.

Leave the speed limits to the states to decide. 55MPH out here in Kansas (especially western Kansas) would be cause for riots.
Zero fatalities is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE until you get every single vehicle on every single road all being controlled by one master computer, with NO HUMAN DRIVERS ANYWHERE in the mix.

Slot cars.
We will reconstruct the highways with slots and everyone has an electric slot car.
Program your destination, ease into a slot at the slot and park, and a computer whisks you away to your destination.
Your car would be charged up WHILE IN THE SLOT!
The grid will probably short out in the rain and snow but it will save the planet.

Leave the speed limits to the states to decide. 55MPH out here in Kansas (especially western Kansas) would be cause for riots. Just because the Federal Government sets it, doesn't mean that he states have to enforce it. Zero fatalities is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE until you get every single vehicle on every single road all being controlled by one master computer, with NO HUMAN DRIVERS ANYWHERE in the mix.
Even then "ZERO" deaths are unobtainable. Computers do crash sometimes.

Probably right with the EV's coming into play eventually, hopefully not in my lifetime though. I do wonder where modern cars get less mpg at 55 vs. 70 mph though? Every vehicle that I know of is in the top gear whether 6 or 8, 9, 10 speed trannies by 55 mph or am I wrong? I do not own 8-10 speed transmission vehicles so I could be wrong? My 6 speed vehicles all shift into 6th gear around 45-47 mph and if I drive 65 vs. 55 the gas mileage drops some at 65 mph vs. 55, especially with my truck aerodynamic like a brick. I also could be wrong but I doubt a 10 speed transmission gets much, if any, better mpg than a 6 speed tranny in day to day normal driving. I once had a rental 8 speed tranny dodge V6 car and hated it constantly shifting gears going up/down hills where I live, was very annoying especially going up steeper longer hills even downshifting into 5th gear from 8th normal driving. If perfectly level roads NO hills, I can see a slight mpg increase in 8-10 speed vs. 6 speed trannies though.

Both the wife's 2016 Camry (6 spd Auto) and my 2021 CRV (CVT) will average better mpg's on the highway at 65-70 mph than they will at 55-60 mph. Both go way down at 80 mph. It may have something to do with going up and down the hills, I don't know.

EVERYONE in the Biden administration was given a job that they know nothing about! EXCEPT for maybe Jen Psaki, I don't think that anyone can tell a lie with a straight face better than her.
