I posted this in the map update thread but decided it needs it's own thread as folks might not return there.

I discovered yesterday that mapsource is now working, on my Zumo 665LM (same as a 660). Reportedly works on a 550 if you have one (I still do but it was fried by a solar storm EMP).  MS wasn't working for the longest time and I was PO'd at Garmin for breaking it.  Hated their replacement Basecamp.  Never found a suitable replacement for route planning and downloading tracks, though I tried I think 3 different programs but they all had issues making them dysfunctional.  Mapsource was easy to use and intuitive.  Basecamp - NOT and it has a bunch of useless unneeded functions that makes it horribly complicated.  I know one techy that likes it but everyone else hates it like me.  Anyhow not sure why MS works now - as all I did was reinstall the original City Navigator then the MS 6.16.3 update (last version they released), I already had in my downloads library. However this computer has much more memory, much upgraded graphics card and CPU processors than before, that is different.  And it's not XP - I suspect there was some compatibility issue between MS & XP.  There were lots of folks grumbling about the loss of MS - it also had a bad memory leak issue but I could deal with that as long as it worked.  MS is working with the current just released map v. 2023-10.  I'm using Win7 on this platform; folks report MS works with Win10 though I didn't try that & load it on my new Win10 laptop a Legion Lenovo powerful gaming machine.  This was reported on https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=17 so I said OK I'll try it again.  This is the MapSource version 6.16.3, update released in 2011 I think.  Read the details at https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1097&sid=95abfbc23992d4a2d180466567c240da

Good write up.  I have Mapsource as a backup (rarely) used to Microsoft Streets and Trips.  Yes I know the maps are old but when I save the GPX file and unload it to the Garmin all that matters is the "GPX" point.
