“I am not a courageous person by nature. I have simply discovered that, at certain key moments in this life, you must find courage in yourself, in order to move forward and live. It is like a muscle and it must be exercised, first a little, and then more and more. A deep breath and a leap.”

While we’re on the subject, let’s not forget that there were many American soldiers in prison camps that were treated almost as bad. Very few of them ever speak of their experience and I’m sure very few left.

Of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II (mostly young men), only about 240,000 were still alive in 2021, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA estimates on average, 234 World War II-era vets die every day.
Many holocaust survivors were children, but there weren't 16 million of them.
Many years ago, I worked with a man who had the arm tattoo.

Yah, WWII and even Korean War vets are now pushing 90 years old. Not many alive yet that is for sure. Dad never talked very much about his time in the Korean War infantry as a paratrooper freezing and hungry and shooting at others. In the midst of cleaning parents' house saw a few articles he saved of him earning medals for what he and others did, even having surgery for removing a bullet of which he never told us either. Even a few black and white photos never seen before. Man, was he a SKINNY thing when age 18-22, a toothpick.
If ever get the chance to see the Holocaust museum in Washington DC, is worth a few hours seeing such a horrid place they had to endure. My kids in middle/high school at the time, had to leave since were crying going thru there pretty dark and gloomy inside. Not many people talking either inside was an eye opener for sure.

In this Woke generation, do they still teach about the Holocaust and the horrors of war?
It's been a long time since I or my kids have been in public schools.

We had whole school assemblies in the auditorium with the Holocaust movies. Several of them.
We also got the Ohio State Police Mechanized Death movies, with screaming bloody people in mangled cars, and a baby hanging in a tree. A bunch of people puked during those.

I still know some who are well into their 90s' I knew a great many as a younger man Telling the world what happened is important. And yes many US servicemen were traumatized just from the experience of liberating the many death camps. Try to imagine the constant death of being in one of them, considered less than human. My wife has relative who was taken to an orphanage in southern france in 1941 There were many righteous gentiles. This charity helps them https://jfr.org/

My dad was in the Marines, aviator stationed (at least part of the time in Hawaii). He never talked about it at all.
I don't remember asking. His home movies of his time in Hawaii, I think I have shared them here before, are all after the war was over. Nothing during.
Don't know when he enlisted but he was out by fall of 1945.

"The Auschwitz Photographer" by Luca Crippa and Maurizio Onnis The story of Wilhelm Brasse, Prisoner 3444.
All I'll say is that some parts of his story will bring a tear to your eye; that is, if one has any to shed for those who were the victims of the largest known attempted group extermination ever perpetrated against humanity (and not all were Jews). I say "known" because all those of Stalin's purges are still not accounted for; we'll never know the exact numbers of his genocides.
I had personal talks with some Polish DP's who were customers of my milkman dad. They were so grateful to be in this country after WWII that their joy was palpable when you entered their tenement buildings.

I think most schools have a few weeks or so on the Holocaust. My kids in a small public school in high school learned what happened. Is a good idea to learn from the past so the same mistakes do not happen in the future EVER. Now with Putin/Russia near Ukraine border is a little worrying, along with North Korea and China as well. Taliban is evil as well. I met a few weeks at former job a black Afghan (or whatever over there in that country) and let me tell you, he was NOT welcome at work literally right in front of me and others hitting on all the women in the office thinking nothing of it wanting to hook up with them disgracing women enough that me and others were going to after work beat the snot out of him leaving him for dead. Anyone else would have been fired ON THE SPOT for what he said and how he said it out loud right in front of us all.

I grew up in NJ and my best friend from 3 to 10 was a Jewish kid from up the block. His grandparents both had 2 rows of #s tattooed on their wrists. They were lucky - both having skilled trades that kept them alive.
The stories they used to tell us would curl your toes. We would sit and listen to them tell their tales while we ate fried grasshoppers and chocolate covered ants. Delicacies they learned to make in captivity and made again on each anniversary of their liberation.
I was a Catholic school kid and we were educated about the Holocaust by the nuns, but at the same time they told me I couldn’t share any of the Jewish traditions or ceremonies. Fortunately my folks told me not to pay any attention to that part of my schooling.
The owner of a die shop I worked in for 8 years was a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto. At the age of 11 he lived for 7 months in a sewer while the Polish resistance fought the Nazis and fed him. He came to America after the war and started a business that still exists today, decade’s after his passing.

Anyone else would have been fired ON THE SPOT for what he said and how he said it out loud right in front of us all. My youngest daughter had AP History in HS and there were numerous discussions regarding the Holocaust and a couple trips to DC where they went to to Holocaust Museum which she just “loved” (for a lack of a better term right now) and could not stop talking about it. She insists when Barbara and I do eventually visit DC and do some sightseeing this is a mist see stop and even volunteered to be our tour guide. When I was in Catholic grade school (‘77 or so) we covered the Holocaust quite a bit for being little kids and there was a TV special on at that time (maybe Anne Frank) when the issue was beginning to be discussed more openly. It’s genuinely sad, disappointing and disgusting to hear people say it was all just a hoax, entirely made up propaganda. I can remember as a kid being so moved and heartbroken seeing all the images of those people and still think to myself how can anyone do (ALL) those/these things to another human being, sometimes it’s beyond comprehension. Even now having watched many documentaries (with actual footage) and seeing movie recreations it sometimes makes me wonder how. I don’t want to get into the politics of it all of who actually knew what and when, it s a bad trip but remembering these people and knowing it should never happen again…ANYWHERE to ANYONE is important.

Thank you to those that responded to my original statement. I went to high school in Yonkers, NY during the 1960's. The school was 50% Jewish and the rest of us were a blend of everything else. I heard stories first-hand that I will never forget. One story I remember did not have to do with any of the atrocities, but with the currency the prisoners used when trading among themselves. Of course, food was the most valuable, but a piece of soap was next. Can you imagine, a bar of soap making you wealthy person? I've spoken with a few young people where I live. They appear to have knowledge that it existed, but lack in any real details. I'm glad some school districts still remember.
