Excessive comfort breeds weakness. PttP

Crossing out of Nevada and into California on the last leg of my journey to Carmichael in the Sacramento area I encountered some signage that left questions in my mind.

I came upon a sign that advised 15 mph around a hard left hand curve.  I traveled that challenge at more than four times the suggested velocity with no discomfort.  If you can't trust the government on advise for a curve's reasonable transitioning what can you trust them for?  I hope the sign was just misplaced.

Along the route there were several signs admonishing "Emergency parking only".  It was obvious that the admonition was ignored by many as I witnessed hundred of vehicles moving rapidly along that road.  There were none parked and there was no appearance of any emergency.  It does no good to set aside a resource for a particular purpose if everyone simply ignores the restriction.

Interstate 80 along that stretch has an exit leading to Donner Pass, the location of the Donner party's gruesome predicament reportedly resulting in cannibalism to avoid starvation.  It seems things might have worked out  with less tragedy if they had simply followed the exit to the Interstate.  Of course, I realize that in those days there were no mechanical vehicles to plow the pavement but even unplowed the solid surface would have been advantageous to travel, at least moreso than the timbered hillsides.

I came upon repeatedly large lettered signs commanding "When wet reduce speed".  Bad advice! This happens more frequently to more aged humans but when I find it so I want to increase my speed to more readily provide for the drying effect of the passing atmospheric elements.

More than once were signs indicating "Trucks must carry chains".  I don't know whether the chains were required to restrain misbehavers or to attach to equestrian beasts for purposes of pulling the trucks if needed.  Either way time has caused one purpose to be unnecessary and the other to be socially unacceptable.  The signs have surely outlived their usefulness.

Life is complicated enough without the placement of misleading or erroneous signage to bewilder the weary traveler.

Carl I agree that would be confusing.  One of Bruce's recent titles comes to mind such as things that make you ponder.  Grin

In North Carolina there's places where you can drive like a maniac,
and other places where you have to drive safe...

In driver's ed, the big mesodorf bully teacher who taught us required us to read every street sign we passed, and often tested us from the right seat as we drove around.

What was that last sign?

I don't know, it had to do with getting off this road, and we're not getting off.

Bam, he'd slug you in the arm.

Ever since then I make an effort to read all signs.  The ones like the second picture that have so much information that you would need to stop for 10 seconds to study are unsafe and confusing.

In PA there were often signs that said caution, no guard rail.  My wife asked what are we supposed to do different.  I said I guess that we'll have to steer now since we can no longer use the guard rail to keep us on the road.

One state I traveled in a while back had signs posted stating; "watch for ice on bridges."  Figured it was a good time to stop and eat my lunch, but after about 45 minutes of watching there were no signs of icing. They ought to cover those signs in July, very misleading.  Roll Eyes

I never thought it was something you had a lot of say in - location wise anyway.

Back when there was only one bridge (now there's only one, but it is the big one) it was
a big deal to run out of gas on the bridge, caused a giant problem...

They should put up a new sign that says its illegal to run barges into the bridge.
