I am sort of new to the board and love the info you guys put out.  I just got a 1998 Tourer up and running.  Long story short I bought the bike from an old friend.  He was not able to ride anymore, and the bike has been sitting since 2012.  I went through the carbs and flushed all the fluids and coolant.  Oil change, filter and new plugs.  Man this bike runs great.  Been enjoying every minute of my rides.  Little by little I'm working out a few kinks.  The tach is still not working so that is a upcoming project.  My question here is the clutch side grip is missing the end piece.  The right side is great with the throttle lock intact.  I was hoping to find this piece and replace it.  All the parts drawings I come across only have the part number for the brake side grip.  The left side (clutch) has a small tube sticking out with internal threads.  Anyone know where I can get this end cap ? Looks like it uses a bolt with an allen head like the throttle lock cap.  Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Even if you had a new plastic cap, it’s not going to fit the way that is situated. Verify the switch housing is correctly positioned with the locator pin in its little hole. If it is then I think the wrong grip is installed or someone shortened it for some reason. New grips seem the best answer.

Agreed, the grip is inset too far in, for whatever reasons. There is a handlebar grips on ebay for $8 ($9 shipping) here. However, it's unclear from the photos which grip end is damaged. Email the seller, etc. The item has a *make offer* option that you might opt for due to the relatively high economy shipping price, imho. The seller doesn't need to ship both grips, also.

The other guys must not have zoomed in on your weird tube...

It reminds me of the place to screw in the weight for the weighted
bars that came on my 2014 Valkyrie.

There's some weird stuff going on with your bars  cooldude ...

Do your bars look anything like this?

I don't remember that the end cap comes off on the clutch side. I
wonder if your bike was changed around to use bar-end mirrors or
something?

if your bars look like hubcapsc's ..... the Left handlebar grip's p/n is 53166-KCR-000. If the oem website is correct, a ton of honda bikes use the same grip. Click here and hit the "where used" button.

That's just in case you rather buy a cheaper used grip. The chrome end cap is not sold separately. The Right end cap is sold separately but I doubt if they're interchangeable.

Definitely not stock. I've been using the same Kuryakyn ISO grips 2 bikes/65,000 mi. I had cramping issues with stock grips being smaller in dia. Kury's are larger dia. and they have a feature to add a palm assist Throttle Boss.

Not about your grips, but this is about your tach. It could be an electrical item. If your taillight is out, the tach stops working. Check the bulb first.

Yep... there's a circuit with a green wire and a brown wire  that goes several places, the
tach, the taillight and I don't remember what else... I mooshed the wires in my windshield
bracket some time ago, and when the mooshed wires finally rubbed through, I had a heck
of a time figuring out why the fuse for my taillight and tach and (I forget) kept blowing...

On a standard or tourer the tail light and tach are fed by the same 10A fuse. I don’t know about the interstate

Thanks for the input.  I guess I wasn't clear on my original post.  I know the grips are not stock.  I was hoping someone would recognize the modification.  The PO told me he added the grips back around 2000.  Lost the clutch side after he laid the bike over once.  I believe the set was a mechanical assist throttle lock and weighted clutch side.  I'll post a pic on the throttle side.  It is still intact and works great.   I have searched all the parts diagrams and sure that is not helpful.  My background is aircraft mechanic and pilot so pretty use to parts diagrams.  I was just looking to see if anyone recognized the brand maybe.

I have read all the input here about the tach.  Brake light is always the first culprit. Been through all the electrical and still have not found the gremlin.  I'll keep at it.

I feel pretty lucky to have this bike.  My old friend bought it new in 1998 and I'm the second owner.  He gave me the bike not running.  I went through the whole fuel system and carbs.  Took about a month and 500 in parts but man it runs great and sounds great. PO was a real stickler for details and took good care of the bike. Him and I spent years working together on aircraft, so I know he is a god mechanic.  Bike has been in a garage it's whole life.  I can't wait to get out on the roads this spring and get to know Valkyrie a little better.  Never owned one.

I agree. My buddy still has two Harleys in his garage so I'm sure he crossed over on some parts.  I feel lucky to have gotten the Valkyrie !!! He can keep his Harleys.  I helped him move some stuff around and noticed that where the Valkyrie had been parked for the last 8 years not a drop of oil on the floor.  Under both those Harleys was a huge oil stain.

Thanks Bassman and Speedy Coop.  Thats exactly the info I was looking for. Already found one on Ebay.
It was a Throttlemeister.  Once I ran that Info across the original owner his 85 year old mind immediately remembered that !!  Thanks.
