Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

All Part Of The Drill...

Yep, it's still drizzling with downright cool temps outside...so, we're staying put! Amazing that the only time the weather folks seem to get it consistently correct is when we're eager to move on, but their forecast keeps us stranded like a beached whale at some motel! I know, of course, they don't make the weather; they only report it... I reckon the current state of affairs is far more preferable, however, than trusting a pleasant forecast only to find nastiness down the road...

"Into each life a little rain...", yeah-yeah, and all that associated jazz. The life of a gypsy rider can’t be all peaches and cream, as anyone would agree. Therefore, we obviously must come to terms with one of the few downsides to our chosen mode of travel... of even travel itself. Along with all of the glorious days of gliding hither and yon, there are also a few days now and then when venturing out would not just be unpleasant; it could also be downright dangerous!

Winter-time riding is a very real possibility for those of us down south, and we seem to find ourselves doing lots of that most years. Naturally we don't go where snow or ice might be an issue, and we do tend to follow warmer temps wherever and whenever possible. We also find ourselves spending proportionately a bit more time hunkered down trying to amuse ourselves in some strange, out-of-the-way motel in some equally non-touristy destination.

If we're lucky, there are food and snacks close at hand or at least within comfortable walking distance, perhaps even some entertainment readily available, as well. Otherwise, we must rely upon Uber, basic TV offerings, and/or delivery pizza. Sometimes genuinely interesting situations can arise in the least expected places, but more often than not, we simply find ourselves warding-off boredom.

For this usually quite content aimless wanderer, dabbling in the somewhat challenging world of writing has become a most welcomed thing... and much more than a mere distraction, although it does have its limitations. Heck, in moments of extreme desperation, believe it or not, I've even resorted to acts of hypothetical planning! The laptop and internet access that comes with it have opened up an amazing and equally fascinating world of endless discovery!

No mysterious secret about how best to cope with these not-sought-after hunkered down extended lay-overs… Actually, it’s pretty much the same sort of general solution used for most of life’s situations… Simply focus upon what we have and not upon what we don’t have. A variation of that old cliché, I suppose, “When life gives us lemons, we make lemonade.” When we’re hunkered down, we don’t fret & stew, wring our hands, pace the floor, or suck our thumbs… We take advantage of whatever is available and find purpose and pleasure in doing it.

This non-tech-savvy laptop operator can actually navigate somewhat efficiently, albeit in a most rudimentary fashion, this hi-tech device that has so revolutionized the entire world! In many ways, it is even easier to use than what I’d fumbled and stumbled around with in the past. Yep, I’ve discovered that GTS (Google That $hit) is, happily, less stressful than confronting that daunting ‘card catalog’ or the bewildering Dewey-decimal system found in all the libraries I once regularly visited. Plus, I don’t have to brave traffic or inclement weather, or even find a parking space for a visit either!

This piece is by no means a pouting lament, nor is it intended to be a veiled appeal for sympathy. It is only an attempt to share one long-rider’s observation of another day in the life… OK, and it’s also an exercise in writing for this hunkered down far-rider in the midst of yet another extended lay-over… Shoot! Let it rain!

...extremely desperate hypothetical planning!  2funny LOL

I can get lost for hours looking at an interactive map. Photos posted, links to historical sites and streetviews looking off of bridges, old buildings etc. Nothing like doing it in person, but fun...

Bruce,
As always, I enjoyed reading your post.  The following paragraph stood out to me:

Well I believe you Bruce. If I've been out on the road as long as you have I'd be doing a lot of hypothetical planning on my weather delayed departures for sure. I'd imagine your computer skills have improved greatly with all the weather delays you've most likely encountered. Safe travels bud!   cheers

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.

On a road less traveled.

Bruce,

GTS is sometimes helpful even for one as you who wanders at a whim to wherever he chooses.
As you said having time on your hands is time to GTS the crap out of a state or area you have thought of visiting and seeing what that world has to offer. So GTS away my friend.
Looking forward to your next adventure.
Ride on my friend.
