I see Barnett has various kits available, some with all the friction disks, plates, springs, etc. I'm thinking for a general rebuild on a working unit would be just the friction plates(9ea), the clutch friction disk B, and maybe a new clutch spring. The other thing I noticed is they're giving them away...cost is rather high. I can get a set of Kevlar friction plates for $157, but looking for suggestions from you that are experienced with this task. Am I better off simply going with a complete kit, or is it necessary?

I’ve only done it once and with Oem. I did not have a bad experience, so I have nothing to compare to. Standard Valk, at 80,655 miles. Replaced all friction bands, metal bands including the riveted ring, clutch spring with all oem parts. Was tempted to go cheaper but didn’t. I’m at 150,580 now so 70,000 with no problems. The original OEM would have/ should have lasted much longer but I burned through it trying to stay upright on the Dalton Hwy at about 60,000 miles so I knew it was going.
Note that getting the cluster lined up perfectly and back in the basket was difficult without a special tool, so from that perspective I’m glad I went with oem and haven’t had to open it up since. The best alignment tool I think is an extra basket if you understand me. Use that one to get them all aligned. Best
