My Valkyrie’s alternator went out at 75,000 miles.  I had it replaced.  I still have the old one.  Being a high dollar item is it worth taking it somewhere to be repaired to keep as a spare or best to chunk it?

Have it tested. If the field is shorted , the repair cost is to high last time I checked.  There is a post in tech about a high output alternator .

Installing new brushes is fairly easy and inexpensive, if that’s the problem.
I would disassemble it enough to check them.

I replaced my brushes at 96k miles and put it right back in service.

It is easy enough to take apart and using the Service Manual test it.

There are posts in the forum on how to fix it. As said, brushes are very easy to do.
