When adjusting the valves is there anything that needs replacing i.e.  gaskets, seals etc. (in a typical job)?

i adjusted my valves 4 times in 214,000 miles. never had to replace the valve cover gaskets, but make sure you put  a dab of permatex in the corners where the valve covers meet the cam ends. also make sure you follow the manual and make sure your timing is where it needs to be for the valves you are adjusting, pretty easy job.

Agreed, dab some Honda Bond, YamiBond, or equivalent to the 4 inside corners, per manual. I didn't apply silicone to the entire gasket perimeter
but you might inquire on other members' opinions on this.

The manual's instruction is a head scratcher.

These points.

Before removing the covers, try note the squeeze outs. (Pics from my photo files.)

I've owned, ridden and wrenched on GL-series bikes since the very early 90s.

My SOP regarding valve cover gaskets and cover bolt seals: I remove, clean in de-greaser solution and dry. If any appear hardened, are cracking and whatnot they're replaced with new - regardless of age or accrued mileage.

Another SOP is the inclusion of rubber service parts to make up a free shipping minimum every time I place a parts order. Let's say I need a water pump - $110 (though the actual price may vary). A couple valve cover gaskets puts the charge over the $150 free shipping figure that most online parts sources cite.

I'll vary this between seals, O rings, bowl gaskets and whatnot every time I place an order, then the spares make it to my OEM repair parts stash against the day they'll be used. The more common the need, the more often I'll order the part. And I usually don't have to wait for back-ordered items to keep me on the road.
