getting defeated.

We are headed to Alaska in a few weeks in our motorhome. It wasn’t running well at all the last couple times I drove it. The gas had been in it for years, so it seemed reasonable that I needed to siphon it out. I did and added 5 gallons of fresh fuel. Then I discovered the fuel pump went bad. Got a new one along with a new inline filter. Had to do all this in the gravel of our front yard as I couldn’t move it to the driveway. Wrangling a 50 gallon tank in the gravel is not easy. Especially when you are old and fat. Anyway, I get it all done and everything properly hooked up. Take it for a test run and it’s running really rough with black smoke poring out the tailpipe. Figure the old gas had probably clogged the injectors. Rebuild the throttle body unit with a kit and new injectors. Take it for another test run. Now it’s worse than ever !

After much brain wracking (not easy with a little brain) I rent a fuel pressure tester and find the fuel pump is putting out 60 psi when it should be about 12 psi. Run back to O’Reilly’s and find that their computer system is wrong, and has the same pump listed for a TBI and an MPI. Finally get the correct one and feel like I’m on the home stretch. At least now I have the motorhome parked in the driveway. I was feeling all giddy with excitement that I would soon have a smooth running engine. Nope ! It’s just as bad if not worse.

I’m at my wits end with it and have an appointment to have it towed to the shop Thursday. I HATE LOSING !

Wish I had an answer for you, but too many possibilities for me to offer any advise. But I just want you to know that I appreciate you doing your part to stimulate the economy. Have a safe trip To Alaska, I could be a tiny bit jealous. cooldude

You'll hate driving it up through BC with a rough running engine a lot more,  with the price of our gas up here.

I’ve been trying to follow it for a while now. It does seem pretty high. But when you factor in the exchange rate it not quite so shocking. Although I figure our round trip is going to run us close to 6 grand just in gas. It is what it is. We have had enough of being hunkered down. Too many friends and family have passed lately. You can’t take it with you. I’m just glad we won’t have the hassle of testing to cross back and forth.

Hopefully the Ukrainians will continue kicking Putin’s butt and the oil prices will come back down.  Smiley

You're right there....your US exchange will soften the blow for sure. You're also quite right in saying "screw it, I'm going regardless"...that's what life's for, eh?
What's your planned route up to the Alaska Hwy?

Rob,
Good for you. Get it fixed and take off and enjoy. If you spend your last dime the day you leave this earth you have accomplished something. Good luck and post some pictures.  cooldude

Sometimes it's better to just take it tp the pros. On a trip like that, you definately want a properly running engine that won't konk out on you.

(envious) have a good trip.

Probably just going to take the quickest, direct route thru Calgary, Edmonton on the way up. Need to be at my brothers service June 11. Coming back I hope to take the Cassiar and thru B.C.
