Looking to start the paint process here in Feb... I know someone knows whether or not you can remove the tins without removing the wheels. I'm wondering if I should be buying a lift before I get going...

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Yes, you can remove them without a lift, with tires on. I did mine in less then 2 hours with a break or 2. Carefull when you put the rear fenders back on so you do not pinch the wires/harness. Mine created a short a few years later. It was pinched.

The only thing you have to worry about doing it that way is scratching the new paint when you put the front fender back on.  You have to squeeze the front fender between the forks to get it back on and you can scratch it and/or cause the new paint to crack.  It was much easier/safer to me to take the front wheel off and slide the front fender carefully on from the bottom of the forks.  YMMV.

Ok, I'm thinking I'll pull the rear on the ground, and then put the front on jackstands to take the front fender off... I was mostly worried about the back, even though I prolly should yank the rear to check the splines anyways...
