Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.

On a road less traveled.

Many have forgotten what Memorial Day truly stands for, many are just looking forward to a three day weekend, the start of summer, pools opening, out here, RV season starts, and so on.
However, for many of us it is a day of Honor where we remember the fallen, our brothers and sisters that have given all, Admiral Nimitz’s tribute to those who served at Iwo Jima, now inscribed on the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial -- “uncommon valor was a common virtue.”  The Lincoln Memorial, “gave the last full measure of devotion.”

Reb (Preston) shared a wonderful story of his family history, thanks Preston.

In honor of Memorial Day, I want to share with you a the performance of Taps at Point Reyes National Seashore by the NPS Honor Guard bugler.

Thanks to all that served.

For me Memorial Day is not for all of us who served.

It is in remembrance of those who didn't get to come home to their families.

The above is true.  I get carried away sometimes and forget the real reason.

For those of you musically inclined, at 3PM local, Play Taps outside so your neighbors can hear.

www.cbsnews.com/taps . There is also a link (key of C) so you can get a copy of the tune.

I was bugler for our boy scout troop.  (and first chair coronet in school)

The Air Force didn't let me play the bugle, they insisted on crummy tape recordings.   Grin

For those musically knowledgeable, he's called a bugler but played a keyed instrument.  He didn't seem to use the keys at all so is that the same process as playing a bugle?

Essentially, yes. A bugle is just a valveless trumpet / coronet. but valved instruments are easier to play.

This thread has, for me, become a sober reminder of what Memorial Day is about.

When I was working, it was a three day weekend.

Today, after reading the responses here and thinking about the why, it is weekend devoted to the remembrance of those who served and did not return or lost their lives due to injuries suffered.

It is about them.

I bring this up because I recently saw a couple of posts on Facebook wishing friends a "Happy and wonderful Memorial Day Weekend".   I was then reminded of the post by 3fan4life.

Memorial Day. A Day of Remembrance!   Giving homage to those who paid the ultimate price to keep this nation free.  Remembering freedom, such was we enjoy, has a price.

My Visit to Arlington, with friends, one of which severed in Viet Nam, 2007.  It is a memory I shall never forget.

A bugle is just a valveless trumpet / coronet. but valved instruments are easier to play.

They are actually harder to play (well) with the three valves adding much more complexity to music.

Trumpets and coronets, being much better made instruments, all have MUCH better sound than bugles.  I never figured out what key a bugle is in, but they have a pretty bad and flat tonal sound.

I could bugle on my coronet, never touching a valve, or choosing a fingering kept constant, and the sound quality was vastly better.

A proper mouthpiece that fits your mouth embouchure is also a part of good sound quality.

Finally, never give a kid a whistle, drum or bugle as a gift (unless you don't like his parents).   Grin

Starting out on coronet in 7th grade, I had a friend down the street also learning a trumpet.  He would sit out on an upstairs porch to practice.  When I asked him why he sat out there, he said his dad made him.   2funny   And I remember my parents quietly talking and wishing I had chosen a flute.

IN 4th grade, I chose Cello, between 6th and 7th added string bass, and sometime before I graduated, I started piano lessons. Played cello though most of my junior year, when I had an accident 6 weeks before state contest where I couldn't bow the cello, but I could "manage to bow" a bass. Senior year I went to all state orchestra on bass, and played with the local Hutchinson Symphony on bass while I was attending community college. Stopped playing everything until 4 months after we got to KC, where I joined a local community orchestra on bass. Now I am the person that sends the emails out for what we are rehearsing each week, and I restarted piano lessons with our conductor (retired school music teacher) about 18 months ago. I started playing bass like I had never quit (except for strength and endurance).

Instruments in our house - an orchestra provided bass ( ex KC Public schools instrument used and abused before I got it), a Yamaha P125 digital piano, and a snare drum setup (wife had started percussion lessons until cancer treatments took away her energy). I would LOVE to get my own bass (and an electric bass guitar and amp), but we're talking $3000 - $6000 for a decent instrument.

I wasn't clear - the String Bass will cost $3000 - $5000. bASS GUITAR OUTFIT DOESN'T NEED TO COST THAT MUCH - a decent outfit for $500 - $1000 would do for that - but I would prefer a fretless bass guitar.

Scot that's great that you enjoy playing music.  cooldude  It' clearly an individual creative outlet.

I sat first chair trumpet section for years (and got to stand up in a couple concerts for short solos), but in HS, our beloved (favorite teacher in the whole school) band master moved on, and we got a little grumpy younger guy who was petty and not well liked.  The third time he singled me out for petty stuff, I stood up and said, you know what, I love to play, but I don't like you, and I don't want to play for you, and I walked out for good.

My parents were very unhappy and tried hard to make be go back; finally dad said;  Look, we paid good money for your horn, and if you don't go back we're going to sell it.  I wanted to keep that horn badly but I wouldn't go back, and didn't have the money to pay for it, so it got sold.

Years later, enjoying bluegrass (and strings), I bought a nice Kay banjo and tried to teach myself picking (not chords).  Hard on the finger tips.  I never got beyond advanced beginner.  I left it home when I went on active duty.  Now it sits under my stairs and some of the tuning pegs won't stay tight.  I should get it fixed.  If I do, I could sit out on my deck and annoy the neighbors.   Grin

I also sang baritone and 2d tenor in HS glee club all the way through.  Again our choir leader was a great teacher.  I had a great voice, but it is long gone.

A poem I saw on Facebook.   I found it touching.  Just wanted to share

'In Waters Deep' written by Eileen Mahoney

In ocean wastes no poppies blow,
No crosses stand in ordered row,
There young hearts sleep...beneath the wave...
The spirited, the good, the brave,
But stars a constant vigil keep,
For them who lie beneath the deep.
'Tis true you cannot kneel in prayer
On certain spot and think, "He's there."
But you can to the ocean go...
See whitecaps marching row on row;
Know one for him will always ride...
In and out...with every tide.

And when your span of life is passed,
He'll meet you at the "Captain's Mast."
And they who mourn on distant shore
For sailors who'll come home no more,
Can dry their tears and pray for these
Who rest beneath the heaving seas...
For stars that shine and winds that blow
And white caps marching row on row.
And they can never lonely be
For when they lived...they chose the sea.

Rest your oars brother
We have the watch.

Thank you Bill, I found it touching (and very well written) too.   Smiley

I love big water.  All I got now is the Potomac mudhole.  Just back from a short ride up and down the GW Parkway looking at it.  The Rolling Thunder boys are in town.

That Beautiful Wonderful poem In Waters Deep put me in mind of 2 Very Moving Ceremonies I took part in while Aboard U S S Yorktown C V S 10. We dropped a wreath at the last known Position of U S S Yorktown C V 5 lost in The Battle of Midway 7 June 1942. She-Yorktown C V5 was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine I-168 on 6 June 1942. C V 5 and Many other war damaged and sunk vessels allied and former enemy are now considered War Graves as they should be! May all thoise who've made The Ultimate Sacrifice Forever Rest in Peace and I thank All Who Served or Are Serving for My Very FREEDOM.
