Hi all, Recently bought a 98 valk having been away from bikes for 14 years (last bike was also a valk, same year, colour). Not sure if I'm imagining it or if it's normal but I think there's a ticking sound at idle and low speed when the bike is warmed up. Here's a video, maybe I'm imagining it! https://youtu.be/YzOUrV8QveE

Can't open video.
Not to be a smart ass (and this happened to me too) but if the small ticking is rolling at slow speed, it can be a rock stuck in the tire tread.

I can hear it when not moving. Like I said it could be normal or I could be imagining it. I tried to share the link again. https://youtu.be/YzOUrV8QveE

Know what, it might be spark jumping from a bad spark plug boot. Look for evidence of arcing. Run it in complete darkness, might even see it then.

It might be a spark jumping. I had the same issue with the spark plug covers you have. the boot wasn't down all the way on to the plug. I used a wooden dowl to push down on the boot. start it in the dark and look for a faint flash.

If you're not desmogged it is likely the pair valve. Some make noise some don't so ride on.

Ticking can be related to; - Exhaust pair valves going bad - Exhaust leak (tighten exhaust header nuts to 7ft lbs) + exhaust gaskets may need replaced - Valves out of adjustment - Could be a loose oil pump chain (this has never been verified)
How do I know all this?
My bike has ticked since day 1! I've gone through everything with a fine tooth comb. The only thing I haven't done is tear the engine apart to check the oil pump chain. Currently have 98k miles on the bike and no issues. Sometimes they just tick.

My engine makes noise like that. In fact it make an odd whirling sound as well. At speed I get an air intake sound.
This bike is kind of noisy.
What would make me nervous is if the flat six was vibrating. These engines are silky smooth, if it starts to vibrate something is wrong for sure.

I'm a new owner of a 97 and noticed mine was ticking too. Glad to see it's normal.
Part of the charm of motorcycles is being able to hear the "mechanical music" to borrow a line from a Rush song. I guess the ticking is just part of that orchestra.
