I moved to Chalmers (aka "Mudge's Station") in 1989 to get the kids away from the city thus they completed their high school education at Frontier which is the smallest class 1A school in Indiana. Anyway their school bus driver Bud Schmitt had a country air strip just outside of town and dabbled in flying or so I thought over the years.
Forward in time to earlier this year I got to meet Bud in person @ 94 yrs. of age. Our local American Legion sponsors a fish fry the last Friday of the month thus I set at the "bar" and wait for my order and Bud is there every time. We small talk as we wait for our food thus 2 mos. a go I got to know Bud more in depth.
Bud was a member of the 11th. Airborne Div., a longtime HD enthusiast, aircraft mechanic by education, pilot of course, and our local school bus driver until retirement. We talked or I should say Bud did the talking and I listened with great admiration about his life. Bud is going to be 95 this year and still flies a ultra light from the "school yard" so to speak.
Here's a video that I thought you might enjoy as Bud is also Bonneville record holder and has such a desire for life that I never seen in my lifetime. This man is an authentic "Cool Cat" in my book! Hope you enjoy.
