Just an FYI.  I'm running a 140/80 (Shinko of course) on the front.  Just got the app on my smart phone to tell me how fast and far I'm going.  Low speeds (below 50 or so), speedo is within 1 mph of the phone.  At 75 on the speedo, phone says 73.  Pretty close.  Was concerned I had more variance.

That's a smaller tire than std ... 150/80 17
Speedo will now run off by more than 5mph @ 70
Need to find 150/90 to put speed back on the money.

Interesting, I've checked my bike and trike speed compared to my phone speed app and my Tom Tom Nav.   The phone speed app and the Tom Tom agree but always show my speedometer to be fast compared to the two other options.   At 70 on my speedometer, both of my other speed checks say 67 mph.

I would be surprised if anyone found his speedometer to be dead on.  They're designed to read a little fast.  The manufacturer never wants one to claim that the speedometer reported less than he was actually traveling during a traffic violation or mishap.

To my knowledge, all Japanese bikes intentionally build in a 5% speedo error (showing faster than actual) because their privilege to export to the US could get revoked (or screwed with) for any speedo error the other way.  And this continued even after they began building them in the US for US sales.

It's negligible at lower speeds, but gets more noticeable at high speeds.

This is the same reason the shortest barrel shotgun you can buy in the US is 18.5 inches, although federal law limits shotgun barrels to (not less than) 18 inches (NFA).  If a manufacturer ever came up one iota under 18 inches, it could cause big trouble for the company.

Most marine speedometers are calibrated fast as well. Usually around 5mph "happy". Done for the same reason. Makes a boater feel great!

f6john,

If you want I can PM you a photo, don't want to do it to everyone on here!  I guarantee you'll never get out of your mind.  Will probably wake you up at night!

Have slight case of "Done lop" disease.  My belly done lopped over my belt.  Most of the front of the speedo will be hidden, and maybe that's a good thing.

Great idea, send it to Rams first, he’s kind of my filter on such things.

Hey, HEY!   Let's not.   I have enough problems sleeping at night based on riding behind John.  Wink

I was on my college swim team (got money to do it).  We wore speedo swimsuits.  I could wad up my suit and hold it in my hand with very little material peeking out of my hand.  Not sure I could/would wear one now   2funny

Remember you wear a speedo with the potato in the front not the back.   Grin

I did a lot of swimming growing up on an island, and in scouts, and our troop was hosted by a small old prop-only Naval Air Station (and Coast Guard station) with the 3d largest indoor pool in the world at the time.  Every swimming merit badge there was, Jr and Sr lifesaving, and mile swim (only 32 laps), and many other things.

And I tell you, I never liked loose boxer swim trunks; they interfere with swimming, fill up with air, and they come off (off the diving board or in heavy seas and surf).  We wore stretchy trunks, but they were not tiny speedos that highlight your junk, not that I had all that much to highlight at that age (especially in a cold lake or pool).   Grin

Bikinis are nice, but sizing should stop at size 10-12 max.

Also, this reminds me, one day in the Naval Pool locker room, we scouts came across a Navy boot's pair of boon-dockers in size 16 (also using the pool).  We could all put both feet in either shoe.   2funny

Mine runs 2 mph. faster thru the legal speed limits with stock tire new and as it gets smaller, it should be more error. I only have one vehicle in our stable thats spot on to use as a comparison and of course all the speed radar warning signs.  Grin
