Escaping Dismal Swamp…

I did a double take after that innocent, routine glance. That initial casual gaze early the other morning upon the sign out in front of the store/gas station next door was little more than idle curiosity really. I was wondering if the price of gas might have crept up another penny or two overnight… Man, it certainly has over the last year or so but nothing to worry about, as the current administration keeps reassuring us.

Hey, it should make us all feel proud that we’re playing an important role in saving the planet. It’s all part of the ‘new normal’ as we proceed along that ‘skillfully’ crafted gradual transition to a carbon-free driving experience. Well, that night we’d apparently made another giant leap forward, as the price had jumped-up twenty cents per gallon! All the blame-shifting rhetoric being spewed at us somehow failed to make me feel any better, however… I guess I just don’t get this ‘well-thought-out orderly’ transition stuff.

Yeah, I wallowed in melancholy for a little while after I’d shaken off the shock… What are we going to do? Should we just return home and abandon the Vision Quest? How exactly does this impact us and our ‘overall plans’? Mostly in terms of costs, but also how soon will this current ‘progress’ begin to manifest itself in terms of shortages and outages? Will we become stranded in some distant locale and be unable to return to Montgomery for the ongoing rounds of doctor visits?

Is sidelining this ‘self-serving’ wanderer simply another part of the broader sacrifices required of everyone necessary to ease the panic that has gripped those ‘visionary leaders’ who inhabit the halls of government and particularly those in the ‘West Wing’? What of other problems that seem to have spontaneously cropped up lately…?

Nothing that could have been done to head-off any of those unfortunate, unforeseen crises, we’re told (no crystal ball). Since Putin caused inflation, the Chinese caused supply chain logjams, and hoarding mothers are responsible for the baby formula shortages… poor old Joe and his team had simply been blindsided. The unlucky ‘victims of unfortunate circumstances’ in the White House are being forced to pick up the pieces, though, and to solve these impossible to ’anticipate’ issues.

Not to worry, fortunately, the Commander-In-Chief of ‘F-Troop’ (Flailing, Floundering and Feckless) has a grand plan that will lead our economy to a more stable, sustainable long term growth glide-path, as we move ever closer to the promised land… No roadmap to show us how that will be accomplished, of course, we’ll just have to “… trust us! But rest assured, we do have one!” I dunno… Frankly, I’m not all that confident… Are any of you?

I then made a common ‘rooky’ mistake: I turned on the ‘news’ to see if maybe another country might have been invaded somewhere. Yeah, I agree… Actual ‘news’ is not available! There is, on the other hand, a wealth of propaganda. Whatever our particular political leaning happens to be… there are channels and outlets for us to select information tailored specifically to fill us in on all of the relevant scoop consistent with our own already held views.  No shortages there at all of self-appointed ‘engineers of public opinion’.

Heard some facts? They all have ‘experts’ on-hand to slant those ‘nuggets of reality’ any way we want to believe things to be, so we can then ‘understand’ precisely how things are, why, and how this will all play out... Those helpful ‘brilliant’ folks will even provide us with insightful ‘talking points’ sure to impress our associates and demonstrate that we are true intellectuals.

Well, I for one refuse to surrender to the attempts at mind control from the constant assault upon my own intelligence. I accept that shortages of fuel and nearly everything else will be an unfortunate part of our future, that fuel prices regardless of shortages are going up and will likely continue even higher. That the cost of everything is climbing, especially for motels and all those services associated with my chosen lifestyle.

Will I have enough money to continue indefinitely given the current rate of rise, or is that a moot point? Is it my duty to simply pay more for everything, pay my taxes, shut up, and run along…? Am I just supposed to meekly leave it to the ‘experts and ruling elites’ to take care of everything? Is my silly desire to try and comprehend what’s really going on and voice an objective opinion actually ‘racist and anti-democratic’ requiring that I be ‘cancelled’? Nothing there that I can do anything about, I don’t believe… So…

When my time in this motel has run its course, I am going to load our girl (paying much closer attention to how I secure all the cargo this time), throw a leg over her ample Russel Daylong, and plant my tush comfortably upon it. I’ll happily then head out down the road away from this ‘Dismal Swamp’ of worry and dismay that I’ve been recently inhabiting…

Nope, I still have some checks in my checkbook, so at least I can’t be broke yet; therefore, the Quest can continue for now… Who knows, ‘Whispering Joe’ just may actually have a solid plan, and it possibly could even work… Yeah right, and I won’t be running into any rain again either…

I remember chuckling to myself when I heard Nikita Khrushchev say that they would take us over “without firing a shot”.  That seemed to me to be such a crazy and impossible thing to do!  I am not chuckling anymore.  Now I am watching in horror as his statement is being played out in reality!

Safe travels my friend!

Bruce,
I simply want to thank you for spurring on the economy.   I've been forced to change several planned things due to inflation bug going around so, do what you do for as long as you can.   cooldude

Nikita, also prophetically said we would destroy ourselves from within. I can’t say what his vision about how this might transpire was, but his prophecy is certainly getting in reach of being fulfilled.

Almost forgot the main topic! Happy that you can carry on a while longer! Don’t forget that there is a little get together in Corbin, Ky coming up in a few weeks if you are in the area.

So much for griping! I wrote the above piece after noticing the price of gas had jumped twenty cents per gallon overnight. Then our girl and her dizzy rider headed out this morning... The price was still the same next door, however... that turned out to be the lowest price we'd see all day! Double dang!!!

Oh well, as my wise and good friend just observed, "We live our lives and make our decisions based on the best info we have. Life goes on with us or without us. I choose the first option." As usual, he is spot-on once again! Glad things are going well in the far north, old buddy... Looking forward to some stories about the big adventure!

I had a friend who's gone now who was in the navy, he worked on a training sub on dry land with a screen door.
