Article with a nice little video. I have to say this would be right in my wheelhouse for some easy cruising and a enjoyable time in calm waters.

Amphicars are awesome.  Unfortunately, just like with any classic car, finding one that isn't a basket case or the exact opposite, a collector's item, is very frustrating.  I've been looking for a long time and there's no middle ground it seems.  Either stupid expensive or needs a complete restoration which has its own problems on a car that wasn't made in mass numbers.

Cool cars and if I owned one myself, it would never see a drop of saltwater.

I saw them in 1965 at the Worlds Fair in New York on my senior trip.  Took a "ride" in one.  Still think it was neat.

That brings back memories.  There was one displayed in the window of a sporting goods store when I was a kid.

it was there both in 64 and 65  I only rode in it once  wowee that was fun for an 8 yr old

not a delorean running on a mr fusion food processor but a ok by me

Wow that was a trip down memory lane so here is a minor hijack but still about the fair

We went many times.  The big U S Royal ferris wheel for 25 cents a ride and that was the first time the GE tomorrow exhibit ride was shown anywhere. It ended up in Disney

Always thought they were cool, but.  here is an excerpt from an article on the Amphicar:  "The Amphicar’s 1950’s Triumph Herald pushrod four has a carburetor the size of a can of orange-juice concentrate and produces 43 hp. The Amphi’s zero-to-60 time is 43 seconds. (No, not 4.3 seconds, forty-three.) Maximum speed on water is seven miles per hour, while 70 mph on land (allegedly) is all you get. To paraphrase car reviewers in the day, the Amphicar “was a lousy car and a worse boat.” Or, as a lost-in-the-mists-of-history Car and Driver writer put it, “As a car, it handled like a boat.”"

I remember my mother going on a trip to  NYC in the late 60's. She came home with lots of Super 8 film of her trip, including about 30 seconds of one of those cars "driving" around the Statue of Liberty.

I think these would be fun too....

Not that I doubted you on the cost but out of curiosity I looked up the going price and found 2 for sale. 1 was in rough shape for mid $20k and the other was in good shape but for over $80k. YIKES!
