Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: July 06, 2022, 03:30:27 PM »

Note: For most of my visit at this house, I received either the Forbidden 403 or 503 message when attempting to log-on. Consequently, I fell behind, so these stories are from sometime over the last two weeks or so. I'm actually no longer even there... I'm on my way back to Florida...

It Wasn't A Fluke…

I did add an additional step on the second attempt at this location, though... I crossed my fingers! Yep, after producing some surprisingly good biscuits 'n gravy the second morning here, I decided to not try again the very next day...

I wanted to have a thorough critique of my inaugural success, and I also wanted to spend a wee bit of ponder-time to help reduce the possibility of not having understood all the nuanced aspects of that recent 'savory' result... One of the more obvious benefits has been the subsequent inclusion of that little extra step.

I was well along with the 'verification' phase of that continuing enterprise, when it occurred to me that a photo might be a good idea. I'm not trying to brag here, but I was indeed rather proud of that second attempt, too! I even thought it was a bit better than the previous batch.

Yep, no flukes here, so... I reckon I'll have to pick up some more fixins at the grocery store... We still have another week and a half to go here, so several more delightful mornings with one of my favorite first meals... And, of course, the nap that seems to always follow soon afterward!

close shell gas station

My stay here is proving to be most restful... and the A/C unit works really, really well! It hasn't been as hot here in the piedmont, happily, as the blistering heat in lower lying areas and out on the plains recently. The bed is truly comfortable, and the solitude has been marvelous...

Among other things, more moderate temps has meant I've even been able to log some deck time also! I haven't fired-up the gas grill yet, but I am pondering hard on it... Would I be pushing my luck by trying a steak…?

Today marks the passage of one full week here, and already I'm beginning to feel twinges of claustrophobia... A little more than a week to go, so... I'm enjoying it while I can! A trip or two to the store, a short day ride now and then... Mostly we've just been 'digesting' being stationary.

Yeah, I do know better than to rent a place for this long, but somehow at the time of booking it just seems the right thing to do. Oh well... Yet another thing for me to work on... I do need to make a run down to Florida when our time here is up, but...

There has been one thing to happen that presumably is a fluke... I was watching some old western movie on TV and half asleep, when the sound of screeching tires and a loud weird sounding thud interrupted my semi-conscious state... I fumbled around finding my shoes, then proceeded to walk out onto the front porch to have a look-see...

Dang! You don't see something like that everyday... Not lawn art either, I didn’t think, as I hadn't seen it last time outside... This photo was taken from the front porch of my rental...

By the time I arrived at the actual scene fifty or so yards away, a small crowd of onlookers was already forming, and several folks who seemed to know what they were doing had taken charge... one of whom turned out to be a member of the local rescue squad. I stayed out of the way and just gawked like nearly everyone else there.

There was a lady trapped in the driver's seat of the inverted pick-up, but the bent top and door of her vehicle prevented her from being pulled out. Later the rescue folks used their 'jaws of life' to accomplish that.

She was placed in the usual 'preventive/precautionary' position on the ‘board’, then lifted up onto and strapped down on a gurney, and finally loaded into an ambulance. She was conscious, her face was grimaced in shock mostly and probably some pain, but I heard no moans or groans... She’d been wearing her seatbelt, but I didn't notice a deployed airbag.

Lots of kids' stuff in the back of the truck had been strewn about, but happily there was no one else in that truck with her at the time. It all ended with the truck being loaded on a 'rollback', the kids' stuff being picked up, and things returning to normal.

Another of the onlookers told me they'd heard her say she'd had to swerve hard to avoid a car that had appeared in her lane. At the time, no one knew if the other car had pulled out in front of her or if it had drifted over the centerline. Simply a momentary loss of attention on her part could not be ruled out at that time, either.

No signs of a collision that I could see, and no other obvious stopped vehicles possibly involved appeared obvious... just the overturned pick-up and a couple of mailboxes taken out. Whatever had happened, it gave this rider serious pause!!!

Many of us on here have had painful mishaps, and all of us have had close calls. We're always only a heartbeat away from calamity! There are some incidents where there is absolutely nothing we could do to avoid our plight, other times where a momentary lapse of our own could prove disastrous.

I cringed at the thought of how close I've come in the past, and I reflected upon the few boo-boos I've actually experienced... "Thank you, Lord, for sparing me this far!!!"

Bruce,
Thankfully, she survived, the pickup can be replaced.   I know all about that swerving to avoid someone in the opposing lane.   Four times I've ridden the Dragon's Tail and multiple times each ride, I've almost been hit head on by folks trying to prove how good they are.

I won't be returning to ride the Dragon's Tail, our roads are dangerous enough.   Keep your head on a swivel and watch out for those who don't or won't watch out for you.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Bruce.  Sorry you had to come back to steamy Florida.  Been tough last couple of weeks here in the sunshine state.  Why who knows one day when you put the spurs on the nail you might just get that dream job at the Waffle House slingin hash.  cooldude

Ive been in a few wrecks in my life but never been in a flipped or rolled vehicle.   Even with a seat belt on it seems to me like your head would be getting some pretty good jolts in the neck area.

Not necessarily.  I'm sure there may be some dependence on the type of roll but I've been in two with no neck issues.

I was in one roll over when I was 14.  I was with my dad in an old 47 chevy pickup, no seat belts hard metal interior, on our way to pick up a cow we had processed on an old country road.  Farmer came flying out of his drive and t-boned us.  We rolled over into the ditch back on to the wheels and drove out.  I happened so fast I think the centrifugal force kept us from bashing our heads in.  The metal on the old truck was so thick that the most damage was where the farmer hit us and even then all the doors still opened and no windows where broken.

Sure don't build em like that anymore. Real Steel. We had a 47 as well. Very familiar with it.
