I replaced it with a comparable smart unit last April and asked my son-in-law for help removing it from the guest bedroom and into the back of the SUV. He has his own business and kept forgetting to stop by to lend a hand so it has been sitting on a recliner all this time. A 27" tube TV is like having a VW parked next to the bed, it's huge and cumbersome. It does have some weight but that wasn't an issue, I just couldn't get hold of it enough to lift it. Today I decided I was going to tackle the job alone, having brought it up last week again with my daughter. I have a 2 wheel hand cart that converts to a 4 wheel cart. I rolled it into place at the foot of the recliner, dropped the leg rest and slid it onto the cart. Since it was too wide for the door I cocked it around at an angle enough so as to clear it then rolled it out into the garage where I slid it onto my bike lift. I backed the car up to the open garage and raised the rear door, then stood there wondering how I was going to lift it into the back of it. Then it hit me...I hadn't yet put away my 6' aluminum step ladder from another project earlier. I laid the ladder with the wide end on the back of the car, pushed the lift up to the narrow end(top of the ladder), lowered the lift down to the level of the ladder and shoved it off and onto the ladder. Then is was merely a good long push and it slid right up the ladder and into the back of the car. Felt like a genius at work and didn't strain anything. Check out the pics and you'll see how easy it turned out to be. Plus...the VW parked in the bedroom is now gone.

I just got my old 4man Jacuzzi tub hauled away off my deck. It had been winterized for 12 years and would probably still work, but maintaining one is a big PITA. The cedar siding was rotting, and there was deck damage underneath (water). I unhooked the 220 heater lead, and 4 guys got it on an industrial dolly out the back yard to driveway to a motorized lift gate and away to the dump it went. I then repatched the water damaged deckboards with available scrap lumber (of all shapes and sizes; plywood, 1 x 4, 1 X 6). 2-3 sheets of 4' X 8' plywood cut up would have looked so much better. So would replacing about 16 2" x 6" X 8' deck boards, but I never use the deck, and I'm not spending for lumber and ripping up all those deck boards secured with a dozen 4" twist nails each. It looks like hell, so I don't look at it.

try lifting a 32 inch tube TV, not fun by yourself. NO way can I do it now, but did about 20 years ago by myself but was a chore indeed. Like you, no way to get arms around the TV so muscled it into my parent's home when finally their 25 inch big BOX TV went bad. It was around the time when flat screen TV's were taking over and large box tv's going out. Still worked fine, but seeing how heavy it was, I left it at my parent's home for new owners to deal with when sold their house this May.

Where'd you take it? Around here you can't take CRT to the dump, Goodwill won't touch 'em, etc. Usually hafta pay somewhere like Best Buy to take 'em... Years ago a friend was unable to get rid of a TV. One morning , we emptied the trunk of his car. Put the TV behind it and went inside for coffee. Someone stole it by the time we finished our coffee. da prez I may know someone that uses Mobil 1 exclusively that has developed a technique of opening the bottles without breaking the ring around the neck (He does have to remove the foil seal), uses the oil, carefully pours the old oil into the bottles the new oil came from, puts the caps back on, puts the bottles back in the carefully opened case box, puts a little glue on the flaps to seal the case shut and just leave 'em in the back of his pickup. It doesn't take long for some kind stranger to come along and handle recycling the used motor oil for him.

My neighborhood has a custom of leaving things out on the street (the trash guys won't usually take) and people will often pick it up. I've picked up a bunch of decent scrap lumber myself. The joke is, if you put a sign on it for 10-20 bux, it induces a perceived theft without paying, and increases the chances it will be taken at all. There are three huge waterlogged (through multiple downpours) couches out a few streets over, no one will ever pick up. The owners remain hopeful (and lazy).

Yesterday was a good day for disposing of stuff. I had my new hvac installed Tuesday and had them leave the old unit for me to salvage. It had a one year old $600 blower motor in it and I also saved the outside fan motor that had been replaced in the recent past. I loaded up everything else and took it to the scrap yard and got $100+ for the what was left. I hope to make a really good shop fan out of the blower, they sure do move a lot of air. It runs on 220 so I may run into some issues there, we’ll see.

Someone stole it by the time we finished our coffee. da prez In my old neighborhood in Florida, it was a bit upscale and dumpster divers and such were always patrolling the area for goodies. If you had something you wanted to get rid of, as has been mentioned...just put a sign on it saying for sale and ask a few dollars. Nothing I ever put out there was worth anything but it was always taken in short order...especially if placed out after dark. One evening our dinner was interrupted by the doorbell. It was a middle-aged Spanish looking gent and he asked if it was ok to take the item on the curb. I was so moved by his honesty that I told him it was junk and it was simply a ruse to get rid of something that no longer worked. He laughed then said he'd send his stupid brother-in-law around, then left. Sure enough, about an hour later we watched a pickup drive by slowly, stop and back up. Two guys jumped out of the back of it, picked up the stuff and drove away. It was an old TV that no longer worked, and an old tape/cd/radio combo that also didn't work. They did leave the sign behind.

I came out the next morning and some AH had cut the power cord off, took it and left the TV. -RP

This breaks the rules of proper neighborhood salvage.
Last week someone left a medium decent, medium sized dresser on the curb.
I did not need a dresser, and the only thing I was interested in was the drawer bottoms; they were very nice birch and not cardboard or laminate. But if I popped all the drawer bottoms out, no one would take the dresser for sure. And you don't do that to someone.
I have cut my own power cords off before chucking appliances.

I once had a metal bed frame with metal springs I tried to give away, no takers. A month later I advertised it for $50 and someone bought it the next day.
