It's that time again. I need to consider buying new tires for the Valk. So I'm going to poll all the experts out there. I bought Dunlop's for the GoldWing last year and I really like them so that's one option. Or, should I buy Avon's again? Is there a better tire out there? Also, what tire pressures are you all running on your tires? I ride one up most days and I put 34 in the front and 36 in the rear. Thanks in advance.

I’ve ridden Dunlop’s, Metzler and Avons through 2 gens. Not ridden the chromes yet but Avons are the best tyre for a Valkyrie. On my ‘05 Wing I ran Bridgestones which were both cheap and handled the best.

I switched to Bridgestone and am happy with the change. Avon raised prices so high that I decided to try something else, and I'd also had QC problems with Avon more than once. I checked my usual sources last week and an Avon rear was $265, while the Bridgestone was $195.

I just ordered a set of the Avons. $517.19 shipped from RockyMountain, but Avon is offering a $60 rebate for the set. Still a lot of cash, but as long as these will last for a while, I won't b!tch too much.

Thanks everyone, I am leaning towards the new Avon Chrome tires. Rocky Mountain looks like a good source. I also don't mind paying a little more if the tires last for a while. Thanks again

If I was lucky (since 2005 on Valks), I could get 8K out of motorcycle tires front and rear. And I run them hard (a pound or two under the max psi printed on the sidewalls). Run car tires for many years now and get over 30K, but the fronts, I still have to be lucky to get 8K. And I tried a double darkside front and got 7K, so I'm done with that. Jeff reporting 20K in the Panhandle makes me think the roads there must be made of marshmallows. Though we know it's flat (and the highest elevation in the whole sate is a bit over 300 ft).

I've run Dunlop, Bridgestone, Metzler and a car tire... every time I swap back to Avons and those are what I'm currently running.

When I bought my Valk 9 years ago, it needed tires. I bought the Avons and installed them front and rear. Like many on here I am amazed at the mileage Chris got out of his Avons. I had cords showing on the front tire and the rear wasn't far behind. I got about 12k miles out of the set. Actually seems like low miles for the front and high miles for the rear. We do have quite a few chip and seal roads here in NE Ohio. I ran 42psi front and rear. I recently just replaced both front and rear tires with Dunlop 4's. I switched just to try the Dunlops. Dunlops are what I ran on my other bikes over the years. Only thing different other than the tires is I am now running BB's in both rather than balance weights. Bike feels good with the new rubber but don't they always.

I've been amazed at the range of tire mileage. Some of us get only 8K miles from a rear, while others get 20K. I usually get a bit over 10K from a rear and several thousand more from the front.
Interestingly I got better mileage out of the old Avon Venoms, that were replaced by the Cobras. I could easily get 12K to 13K from a rear, and on the front I got well over 20K. Those were good tires unless you got a defective one, which was not uncommon. Many of the front tires would wobble in turns. Over the years I've had more tire problems with Avons than any other brand.
