Guardian Angel

Was with me this morning. On the way to VA for an appointment riding the motorcycle, I came to a railroad crossing. The warning light flashed once and the gate started down. At first I thought I was going to cross. The brain said " hey dummy , the gate is coming down". I had to lock up both brakes and came to a stop in the center of the lane. It is a single lane road in an industrial area. Just as I came to a stop , an suv passed me on the right and went under the gates. It was so close and so fast that I did not even get shook up. Not until after the train passed and the gates opened did I realize I was almost in accident number 10. I still do not know why I was not rear ended. Usually the red lights flash four or five times.

Those guardian Angels are good to have.

One time I was approaching a blind RR crossing (the view was blocked by a commercial building that set close to the tracks) in an S10 pickup that I had.

I was almost to the tracks when at least in my head I heard a voice yell "STOP".

It was real enough to me that I slammed on the brakes and skidded to a stop just short of the tracks.

No sooner than I came to a stop a freight train came barreling through the crossing.

Several engines had passed before the gates started down, I had to back up quickly to keep them from hitting my truck.

Several days later I was telling this to a friend that was a safety inspector for the railroad.

She asked me for the date, time and location that it occurred.

I was able to provide her with the date and approximate time.

She was able to determine that the train was way over the speed limit for that section of track and that was why the crossing guard came down late.
