I noticed today when I first started riding my charging voltage was around 14.3 volts, a half hour later after the bike had warmed up good I just happened to notice the voltage was around 12.6 volts.  I haven't ridden for a couple of weeks and I know the charging systems on some vehicles charge higher when the battery voltage is down then cut back as the battery charges back up. 

Is that's what I'm seeing or is it time to check the brushes in the alternator?

I’m not sure, but mine charges 13.8-14.3 all the time. Doesn’t sound normal to drop that low to me.

You will know on the next ride if the meter reads 11V or doesn’t start at all. Means alternator died or (hopefully) the 55A fusible link fried for some reason. I d check that fusible link first thing.

Depends if the engine rpm was above 1200 or so when it was over 14 or if he was at idle at 12.6.  If he was over 12-1300 and at 12.6 then he has alt trouble.

Could also be the small connector on the alternator is loose, or needs cleaning.
