Hello,

I'm a member living down here on the Cape, I haven't participated on the NE board before (that I can think of). It seems like a good group with good history.

Ok, now that I'm done buttering you up.

I've got a Tourer that has been a work in progress for six years or so. I've put just shy of 100,000 miles on her, love that bike. I have a rust problem, the cross member that the kickstand attaches to has a good sized hole in it. I've been keeping an eye on it for awhile, it's time to fix it.

The easiest way is to do a frame swap. My concern is the RMV. Has anyone had a situation like this, as far as titling is concerned? I've found a few decent frames, some from Pinwall. They have a disclaimer that states no frame is sold with a title, just a Bill of Sale. Is Mass one of the more difficult states to navigate?

I'll be contacting them this week, hopefully it won't be too crazy.

Bob, before I went to the expense and hassle of a frame swap, I'd seek out the opinion of a experienced welder.

As far as the Mass RMV goes, good luck.

I've found that if you walk in and you don't like the response to your request, get back in line and ask again.

Different counter rep, different procedures and that changes depending on how their day is going.

That's pretty much what I expect from them.

I've also considered repairing it, as you said. Big BF had a repair for that area, primarily for a twisted member. I can't imagine what it takes to twist that piece, it's pretty stout. I think his repair involved cutting out the damage and welding stubs in on each side, then bridging the span with new steel. He had a good tutorial available,but with his passing, his website has been cleared.

I've seen a couple of wrecked frames with front end damage that would be ideal donors for that cross member.

I'll look around here for a good welder, do you know anyone up your neck of the woods?

I haven't looked closely at my crossmember (I guess what I'm calling the
crossmember is what is rusted out on your bike), but I don't remember
it being very studly... it is hollow, think (?) ... maybe "sacrificial"...
 I always wondered about BigBF fixing it with a thick piece of bar stock...

I don't know what the rest of your frame looks like, but I'd vote for
getting it fixed/welded over a different frame...

Bob, any decent mig welder should be able to fix it pretty easily. If the top of the cross member is rusted out it may require removing the engine though. Is this the only place of rust on the frame ? If other areas have problems, it may make more since to go with a new frame.

Bob, I did a Google search of "Welders on Cape Cod" and like +20 came up. 

Like Rob said, any decent mig welder should be able to handle that pretty easily.

My thoughts would be you'd have to remove the swing arm, but you got the tools for that now, right?

I'd further suggest a mobile welder.

Have him come out and evaluate the situation, then prep it and he can come back and hit it.

Sure beats swapping frames.

MASS RMV is __________ fill in as needed. I did a pair wings many many years ago when salvage titling first came out. At that time it had to be trailered to a DPW yard for inspection and documentaion review not terrible, but that was then.

I also did a salvage truck rebuild with a frame swap, no title needed for frame just original vehicle, but all replacement parts not original had to have proof of origin with matching numbers. vehicle was re tagged at that time.

And don't forget in todays world you need an appoinment just to get to the counter.

Ok gents,

I'm not the best at responding in a timely fashion sometimes...my apologies.

I'm going to take the advice and fix my frame. This has been moved over to a winter project/D-check.

If you've seen my recent posts about the issues on my attempt to get to Valhalla in BC a few weeks ago, my clutch needs to be replaced, so what better time to just put er down and do it all. I'll be able to fix all those pesky little issues and see how close I can get her to look like some of your rides...

That should keep me busy for awhile.

One great improvement I made to my bike when it was getting tired was refurbing
my levers when they began to get floppy. On a new bike they're mounted solidly in
their perches and work crisply... that's how you want your levers to feel  cooldude ...

well they continue to work. I think I need to lube my throttle tube
