I never knew this from all the times I used my drills. I have battled at times releasing the bit but never knew this was the problem or actually the feature that works. I have also had bits release on me when I was using them, but now how awesome is this to lock the bit in place.

I was laughing when I saw this and thought I cant be the only one who didnt know this as much as I use the drills.

Cordless drills have an unknown feature that seems too good to be true. I reached out to the manufacturers to see if this is real. #powertools #diy #cordlessdrill

Interesting.  Will have to see if that really works.

Ummm.. I've drilled countless holes while building for over 30 years and never had a bit come loose. What's the big kerfuffle about?

Lol. I went out to the shop and grabbed my 20V Dewalt. Yes it does it but I’m having a hard time finding any value in this feature. I’ve never had a problem not knowing about this for all these years.

Sometimes when you are trying to use a small grinder on the drill or a round wood rasp, or even trying to slightly enlarge the hole on a piece of metal I have had the drill come loose. I have also had a hard time releasing the bit not knowing about this feature and not getting the bit to release.

You would think that any counter rotational forces which might happen to loosen the collar would naturally click the chuck back into that backed off, quarter turn position?
The only time I've ever had a bit come loose is on a keyed drill chuck, and that didn't happen very often either.

This looks like some clever YouTubers have found a way to make a little money. I'm guessing many drill brands use the same third party chuck manufacturer.. Could be wrong on that though.

edit: just checked it out on my Milwaukee drill, it does click back.. I guess it's an interesting thing because very few people know about it. In my day-to-day work it makes no difference at all.. Might come in handy during a Trivial Pursuit game.  rider

This one click move in the opposite direction does not actually put any more clamping force on the drill.  I haven't taken one of these chucks apart, but I believe this one click is really an intermediate position before the ratchet pawl engages to turn the chuck in the opposite direction. This is not in the manuals because it doesn't serve any useful purpose and cannot be used by marketing as a "feature."

That feature is there, but, I don't use very often either.  But I have bits slip quite often, just grab the chuck and I tighten it back up. I just thought it was part of making holes.

Back Before I joined The Navy-1964-I worked as a production machine operator. On one of the drill presses I used there was a keyless chuck. The drill press stayed running as I changed out drill bits and reamers. Piece mounted to a jig and the jig had different settings for the drills reamers and the taps that were mounted to different drill presses sharing a common table. NOT Really relavent to todays cordless drills but as stated I was using a keyless chuck back in the early 60s! Do NOT Know how far back a keyless chuck goes.  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

Got a cordless drill. (DeWalt)

Had others. This is the first time I've heard about this feature.

I don't use the drill much. Don't use tools much anymore but when I did one of the things I'd use the drill for was to take screws out as I would disassemble something. This is when I would have the bit come loose as it is spinning in a way that would tend to loosen things.
Wonder if this feature solves this problem?

Well I’m glad you put it out there. I can now say I learned something new today. Honestly should be more general knowledge for everyone who uses a cordless drill. I’m going to be passing it on to my coworkers. Thanks again!!
