Hey All,
I went out to look at a 2001 I/S with 62k mi. When looking at the bike, I noticed that when we opened the Side bags, there was some brown substance brushed onto the bottom portion of the bags. When I asked about it, the current owner said that there were some cracked in the bottom of the bags but had read that it was a common issue and that he had read that repairing it with PVC glue was a recommended repair.
I did a few searches on here and didn't see anything.
Is this a common concern?
What are these bags made of? Im not overly worried about it as over all the bike seemed very clean.

And all the bag mount points are supposed to have rubber insulators on them.
Also, while they would probably not crack the bags, the thin heat shields over the exhaust, and under the bags get bent up (and rusty) and they might rub the bags. They are easily bent to fit better.

100000+ miles on mine-99-and the only cracks in the L saddle bag is the one I put in it myself!  And black PVC hardening glue Will repair cracks and can be sanded and painted after Fully cured. RIDE SAFE. |

Out of the five sets I've owned, never seen a crack.

Thanks.. I found it odd. I didn't see any signs of damage from outside just these strokes of brown paint/glue on the inside.. I can't imagine how ABS could crack on the inside without having damage on the outside..
I'll have to take a better look.

My Tourer bags have a seam on the back and in the middle on the bottom too I think...
I think Honda put some brownish goo on the inside at the seams for waterproofing.
Might that be what you are seeing? I could go out and get a picture...

I would use a epoxy like Devcon (worked for me) and/or JB Weld. I had a LeatherLyke lose its retaining pin and it fell down on the hot muffler.

JB weld is a temporary patch. PVC will not stick. I will get a lot of negative input from this. ABS black plastic glue and MEK for primer will repair ABS plastic. They can be plastic welded also. I have repaired many bags , fairings and side covers. The brown residue is a sealer. I have seen it in some bags , not all.
I repair the inside and outside with ABS black plastic glue and have filled the seam on tourer bags.

I have had bags crack and repaired them with black ABS cement. Works great.
