So the triplets have fall break this week, off school. I noticed that a while back, and got to thinking, which is dangerous I know; hey, I bet mid October would be nice weather to go to South Texas!

So plans were laid, vacation granted, etc... This ride was to be a test of both the Goldwing and KK to see if they're up for Inzane next year (Whereever that may be *Cough Cough*). Happy to report both passed with flying colors, although the Wing still makes "That Weird Noise" when it's cold....

So anyway, the ride.... Saturday, the 8th we left from home, headed out to Cooper's BBQ in Llano Texas, some of the best smoked meats you'll ever wrap your lips around. From there, off to Luckenbach Texas to get that all important pic in front of the old post office (Dang has THAT place gotten bigger/busier than it was last time I was there!) then off to Stonehenge II, then Kerrville for the night...

Day 1 - 344 miles

Side note, people are always telling me "Oh, I wish I was as tall as you!" No.... no you don't.....

Day 2 - The Texas Three Twisted Sisters, Uvalde, then on to Eagle Pass and into Piedras Negras in Mexico. 253 miles ridden, 7.9 miles walked.

(We were there on a Sunday and they were closed, sadly)

Stopped to pay our respects for the victims at Uvalde. They were mostly the same age as my triplets.  Cry

KK is now an international traveler...

I wanted KK to look for the similiarities as well as the differences between USA and Mexico, what better way to see them then to go somewhere very familiar to see how even it is different:

She was baffled that they don't refrigerate their eggs, and I don't think believed me when I told her if you don't wash 'em and don't ever refrigerate 'em they're perfectly fine at room temperature.....

Wandered around some other shops and areas, took her a while to screw up the courage to go order an ice cream, but she finally did it, as long as I was standing with her.

...I'll add on to this post later when I have the time and energy. We are home safe now though...

Day 3 - 354 miles along the border from Eagle Pass TX to South Padre Island (With an attempt at getting to Starbase Texas on Boca Chica beach but being turned away because SpaceX has closed the roads 'cause they were doing interesting things that day.)

Didn't know these were a thing, researched 'em later after seeing several of 'em flying over the border:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethered_Aerostat_Radar_System

After being turned away 5 miles from Boca Chica headed to our hotel on Padre Island. Mid trip I'd decided to extend the trip by 1 day, with day 4 mostly being a "Lounge around the beach" day, so while they were shuffling all that around I decided to spring for the extra $60 for an ocean view room with a balcony..... KK approved of this...

I'll spare ya'll the endless pics of the fat man and the cute kid frolicking in the ocean, but here's at least one...

Gorgeous sunset.....

Day 4 - 81.4 miles ridden

SpaceX had the day listed as a "Possible" closure day, from 8A to 8P, so we decided heck, let's give it a shot and test our luck...

Woot! Made it!

The reason for the road closure is they were trying to stack the Starship on the Super Heavy Booster for the first time. The black finned thing sticking out of KK's head is Starship, the silver silo thing coming out of my shoulder is the Super Heavy Booster. They managed to complete the stack the next day, making for the tallest rocket ever assembled (Yeah, even taller than the Saturn V!)

It's really amazing how close you can get to the rockets right now, a lot of the space-heads (Groupies that hang out all day watching the site) think that once Starship has a successful orbital flight NASA will get more involved and keep people WAY further away.....

But for now, I took this pic with my phone!

Geeked out for a while longer with some of the other geeks out there, was gonna try to get a selfie in front of Elon Musk's house (A $55,000 house around the corner) but it started raining, and there was a lot of sand on the roads, decided to just git on back to the hotel and the beach..... (Where it wasn't raining Smiley )

Rented a beach chair with an umbrella, and spent the rest of the day sipping Bourbon, smoking cigars, and watching the kiddo play in the surf (Joining in between cigars here and there of course.)

Day 5 - 372 miles ridden, 5 miles walked

South Padre Island to San Antonio with a detour to Corpus Christi/Port Aransas because why not...

I generally avoid Whataburger ever since they sold out to the *(#$)@ Yankees, but when you're riding by the world famous two story Whataburger with a view of the Bay.... well, one makes exceptions...

Our own little 3 minute cruise, the Port Aransas Ferry... I have to wonder at what point the cost of operating/maintaining/manning the ferries as well as the loading personnel, etc, would be equalized by the cost of just building a bridge.....

Got to San Antonio, checked in to cheap hotel near the Alamo and River walk. I'd given KK a talk about the Alamo being a place of reverance, not happy bouncy joking. I think she took my comments a little too seriously and looks half asleep or something...

From there on to the Riverwalk...

And the obligatory Riverwalk boat tour....

Rule #1 of the Riverwalk - NEVER EVER eat Mexican food on the Riverwalk! It's always way over priced and awful..... So we ended up at, of course, an Irish pub... Properly poured Guinness and pretty decent bangers and mash I must say!

Walking back to our hotel we went back by The Alamo, and I told her it's okay to respectfully smile, just don't be jumping around and stuff.....

Day 6 - 311 miles.

Home day. San Antonio to Rowlett.....

Mostly a get on the super slab and drone day. Took SH130, the highest speed limit in the nation at 85. But the cross winds were so horrible I was barely doing 80 through most of it...

Only other interesting stop on the way was a quick drop in at Balcones Diltilling for a few bottles of the distillery only expressions. The one I wanted (Shiner Bock Whiskey) was already sold out, but I did manage to snag some peated rum, which should be interesting...

...and home.... I even went and washed some of the bugs off the 'Wing...

Very nice! You're a lucky guy to have all those kids that enjoy the long distance rides...combining riding with a one on one adventure with the kids just can't be beat, I'm sure. My daughters never minded jumping on the back of my bikes for little day trips, or going on longer fishing trips with the old man, but neither were really interested in taking off for longer multi-day rides. At least 2 out of our 3 granddaughters are showing good potential though, as future touring co-pilots  Smiley

So the clutch/transmission issues are all cleared up, or you've just learned to live with it?

There's an aerostat just outside of Marfa as well.  When I was doing my requisite student pilot hours I was living in the keys.  The Air Force had an aerostat in the lower keys that was prominently marked on the sectional charts.   You weren't allowed to fly within 5 miles of it cause I guess they figured that hitting a steel cable at 9000 feet could ruin your flight.

I swear She's grown some since I met her!  Shocked Glad you  are back at yer Hacienda!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

It was over a year ago, and they grow a lot at this age, sure she's grown several inches...

Learning to live with it... Part of the reason for this trip was to push the bike and see if it breaks down on me, but keep it no further than 500 miles from home so I could get it trailered home without TOO much hassle... Mechanically, other than the weird noise in neutral or when the clutch is out it's performing beautifully...

So you prolly coulda, woulda -- but I understand not doing the shoulda -- rode on with plan "A" from Insane?  It looks like you guys had a good time sans bike anyway, but what a headache to have it towed home and looked over to discover it's just a weird noise.

I'm hoping the shop let you off easy on their "diagnostic" time?

Well, that's good. Sometimes, bikes (even Hondas) have their own little idiocincrities where one thing is slightly off the norm...maybe yours just has that "special" sound that makes it different. If you find yourself having trouble "learning to live with it" down the road, you can always swap out your stock exhaust for some glass packs and truck stacks...then you'll never hear that noise again  Grin

oh, it's coming, it's coming, believe me.  Been there, done that.  Lucky I had (or my wife did) to call the cops and put a restraining order on the kid vs. going over and taking care of it myself.

I always figured that a .44 magnum and a backhoe beat a restraining order.

When I was in High School, the father of a girl that I dated a few times insisted that I come in the first time that I came by and picked her up.

He proudly showed me his extensive gun collection and then looked at me and said, "My daughter will be home on time".

She was the only girl I dated that was ALWAYS home early!
