When at idle....tach is not stable with 50-100 rpm changes at idle. Thoughts?

Something easy to try....  Remove headlight bulb and measure voltage.  An old-style multimeter with the needle works well for this.  Voltage reading should be "steady" with the ignition on and engine off.  Start the engine and observe if the needle is "bouncing".  if so, repeat the engine-on measurement at the alternator output terminal. 

If measuring at the alternator shows "bouncing", your alternator might not be producing a constant flow of direct current.  The problem could be the rectifier circuit inside the alternator case, or the alternator itself.  If you have a spare alternator handy, you may want to change it out and see if the problem disappears.

Do you notice it when you are raving the engine about 2000 rpm’s.
What is your idle set at.
