Well, well - I had a day to remember. It started off ok - we had a chiropracter appointment at 0930. Went through that, picked up friends for lunch, then dropped off some stuff at a re-use center. When we got home - I had some things I needed to take out to MIL, so I thought - "it's in the mid 70's, I haven't been on my Valk in too long, so lets take it out there". All was fine, until on the way home - it started sputtering - yep - I ran out of gas. In my defense, my last fillup was in March (back issues have taken a big hunk out of my riding this year).  I was about 2 miles from home, and had to call the wife to bring me the gas can that I fill the lawn tractor with. - Almost no gas there either, so we went off to a gas station, where I got 3 gallons, Valk started right up, then I headed to favorite station for ethanol free gas.  Got home. Eating homemade chili for dinner before heading off to Piano lesson.

No reserve ?

If he's like me, it was on reserve when he ran out.   Happened once and hopefully never again.

I've actually developed almost a nervous twitch, while riding a Valk periodically I check to make sure I'm in 5th gear (Or maybe I'm just looking for that elusive 6th?) and check the position of the petcock to make sure it's not on reserve.....

I'm going to have to check on the Pingel petcock position. It may well have banne on reserve. Then again, I've noticed that my pingel uses 5 gallons on main and .3 gallons on reserve....

I have to get in the habit if not running the cycles for say 1-3 months to turn OFF the petcock to OFF.  Big BF shook his head at me when he was here working on the 98 Valk instructing me to turn it OFF if not running it for awhile.    Some say to shut if OFF after every ride for the day,  but not sure that is necessary?

Ditto for me.  I never turn the Pingel, with a Dan-Marc in play, depend on the electrical shutoff.  So forgot where the reserve position is.  I pushed it fully forward. No help.  I must be outta gas - not sure why but I've seen that before with the leaking Hondaline petcock.  So called the wife to grab a fuel can and rescue me.  Not convenient, I was around 15 miles from home.  Never told her I SNAFU'd it when I figured it out.  I would have had 10 miles or so of range if I had put the Pingel in the middle position.

Never having run out the new IS tank with the Pingel, I tried to see how many miles I might get with normal mixed riding.  I know Deerslayer (with IS tank) hits reserve typically around 195 miles with the Hondaline petcock.  I always top Jade up before hitting reserve.  I was at 224 miles and still on the main.  But now I needed to fill up, about to leave on a trip.  Oh well.   On the way back from eastern Kansas, I said now I'm gonna find out.  Got to about 180 miles and it sputtered.  Well that's wrong, but of course I'm cruising fast so it's not valid for normal riding.  And there's mostly corn gas in it which gets less mileage - around home I run pure gas exclusively.  Instead of switching to reserve, I activated the pump to transfer the belly tank fuel to the main.  It's much slower response than switching the petcock; has to pump up enough fuel to raise the level in the main.  Took about a minute or so, while I was riding on state highway 86 - rural 2 lane, 65mph, no shoulders, no towns or facilities for miles.  The car I had passed was a half mile back, caught up and passed me as I was down to 20 or so.

So I still don't know the run-out main tank distance with normal mixed riding on Jade - or how many miles I can expect from the reserve.  Not that it matters a lot as I have the almost 3 gallons in the BT as a super-reserve.  Still would like to know.  FYI I have almost 350 miles range with nearly 10 gal onboard, in normal mixed riding.  Recently, the mileage measured at 38.9mpg, better than the usual 34.
