I went out to blow some gas through my carbs... my speedo worked as I
was leaving, and not when I got back. Nothing works, no speed and no
odometer.
I checked the wheel connection - took it off and spun the little tab with
my fingers and put the cable back on.
I searched the board and think maybe I can fix it with just a cable?
Has anyone ever had the gear stuff in the wheel go bad?
I turned the odometer over 4,000 and something miles
ago, so if there's ever a good time to get a new $peedometer,
I guess now is it.

There is a flat washer in there that has two "tabs" that are 90° to the flat part. If those get flattened out, the speedo stops working. It usually happens when reassembling the front end, but it CAN happen randomly.

I ordered a new cable and will follow up when it gets here... There's one of those "Valkyrie whisperers" a couple of towns over. I've done all the work on my bike for the last 15 years, but he replaced my timing belts recently and did some "color tuning"... The Log Truck is running GREAT and is a really good bike  ... my rear valve stem was loose while I wore out my last tire and I was always having to add a little air... I fixed that before the fall color ride and today when I checked, both tires were still perfect... -Mike |

I had a broken speedo cable on my tourer a few years ago. It had 63000 on the clock at the time. Easy fix. Hope yours is that simple too.

Roughly every other year I pull the cable, remove the inner, clean and grease w/ synthetic (Park Tool bicycle grease is ideal) then reassemble. This equates to roughly 10k miles accrued, so if you rack that many up per season I'd consider doing it every year.

So that cable measures the mph? Did you mean tripometer instead of speedo? The cable has nothing to do with the speedo. Or does it? Never did thought about it, How does the speedo work?

It runs the speedo and the tripmeter. |

The illumination is separate. |

Well, now I am starting to doubt myself. Maybe I just THOUGHT that neither of them worked, because I couldn't see them. The more I think about it, the more I think that it was just the lights that went out. Sorry for the misinformation!

My new cable came in. It did the trick ... My old cable wasn't broken, it was seized up. That's my fault. I've never lubed it. Undoing the old cable from the speedometer was a clumsy affair, I took off my windshield and used needlenose. Routing the cable was easy. I'd recommend lubing your cable and taking care during the clumsy part... Since the cable was seized up, I wonder why the gears in the wheel didn't strip out or something? It's not like they were holding back the 800 pound motorcycle from going down the street ... seems like something would have had to give... I should give the old cable another look. Maybe it really is broken up inside there somewhere and spins on the wheel end... -Mike |

Mine's. I just went and put a little flathead screwdriver into the slot at the wheel end of my old cable and could turn it. The other end, the speedo end, did not turn. I think mine is broken near the middle, I could hear noise from there when I was turning... -Mike "lube them cables..." |

When I regularly rode with a group of Valkyries one of us had a speedo cable, another a throttle cable and so on.
None were ever needed but.............................

I lubed my choke cable ten or more years ago. I still have to hold my choke on! I'm all for lubing the throttle cables and now the speedo, though... -Mike |
