I got an email message from someone whose email address is a "user name" that appears on this website.

They asked for a favor.

I asked them what favor?   Here is the response I got.  I will not respond.  Just wanted you all to know.  I will provide the email address this person used if asked.

Glad to read back from you, I've been trying to order a (Amazon Gift Cards E-mail Delivery ) for my Niece's on Amazon. It's her birthday, but it says they are having issues charging my card. I was wondering if you could help me purchase an amazon E-code gift card over there from your Amazon account? Let me know if you can handle this for me so that I can send you her email so the E-code can be sent there and I am only looking to spend $200 on it, I'll refund it back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks
.

First:  Not real English.   Who says "read back from you"?
Second:  Wants me to get card E-code and then send to his niece then he will "refund it back".   Really????  If it was real, he would send me the funds first.

They do get marks for creativity.

That's one I've not seen before.

It's obviously better to delete without responding.

But for a response:

OK.  After you send me $200 cash, I will consider buying your nieces some Amazon gift cards.  Please send pictures of nieces as proof you have some.   Grin

I did, the person has changed their account passwords to hopefully stop it from recurring...

I got the same pair back in September. The initial 'favor' email came from a Yahoo server, apparently from the account of an old high school classmate. Interestingly, the night before I saw this classmate on a Zoom high school reunion. So I replied with a 'nice to see you', and said I rarely use Amazon.

I just looked at the headers and now see that the 'Reply To' property was for a Gmail address using this classmate's display name. The 'give me money' follow up came from that Gmail address. I ignored it.

There's more to the coincidence. In the Zoom reunion, I learned that this classmate rides motorcycles.

The only reason I opened the email to begin with was the email address had a user name used on here @cox.com.

I think "cox" might be a legitimate "email server".   But I did not verify that.

Yes, likely from an email harvester.
But, seriously, who would fall for that and actually send money?

Well not many since payment was "after the fact" but when I saw the sender's address and it flashed across my memory, I looked on here for the same and found it.   So......

Maybe just happens chance.
