So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: December 12, 2022, 08:38:11 AM »

While I may not have the most exciting or extensive "Bucket List", I have managed in one way or another to achieve or do most of the things on my "Bucket List" during my life.

During my early youth, I was afraid of heights (still am to a certain extent) but, I made myself go skydiving.   I was so scared during that first and all of the following jumps, I very well remember hearing my heart pounding inside my helmet.   Went on to get 93 more free falls after the initial five static line jumps.   Didn't ever fully overcome that fear of heights but, I refuse to let fear drive my decisions as to whether or not to do something.   But, I always consider the issues.

Always told my dad that if I ever served in the military, I wanted to be a Marine.   When my draft number came up, I didn't wait, dropped out of college and joined.   I was going to get drafted anyway so, why not serve where I wanted.    That was some of the best times of my service.   Regardless of what else or where else I go, I'll always be a Marine at heart.

As a child, I always wanted to fly helicopters, don't know why but, that fear of heights was never present while flying.  After serving in the Marines, returning to college, I saw the Marine and Army Officer recruiters, the Army recruiter sold me on going Army when he told me that all the requirements for all military flight schools were identical but, if I wanted to be a helicopter pilot, I should remember which service had the most helicopters and thusly, the most need for pilots.   That's all it took.   Regardless, I could cross that off of my list.   I also signed up and tried to be one of the first Army astronauts.   Didn't make the cut but, I tried.

Rode broncs and a couple bulls in Rodeo for a while, probably wasn't the brightest thing I ever did but, it was kind of cool and the buckle bunnies made it a lot more fun.   There were a lot of other things that I did do but still others I haven't gotten around to or just haven't had the opportunity.

Some of those things on my bucket list I'd still like to do:

1: Visit and ride New Zealand.
2: Own and fly my own aircraft.
3: Ride on the route that takes you through every CONUS state.  https://flytrippers.com/perfect-itinerary-for-an-epic-usa-roadtrip-all-48-states-at-once/

Probably some other things of a smaller nature but, I'm curious about the bucket lists others might have.   There may be some things I'd add to mine.

Cool post Ron.

I’ve never put my bucket list on paper, although riding the lower 48 would definitely be on there.  Thanks for the link to the map.  I’ll be giving that some serious thought.  I only need the northeast, but it would be pretty cool to hit them all in one road trip.

Just before I turned 50 I had a health scare and decided then that it was time to do some of the things I had dreamed of before I ran out of time.  Within 2 years I went skydiving (3 times), deep sea fishing, white water rafting, hang gliding, drove a NASCAR, and vacationed in Belize.

A cruise, riding Canada and Alaska, and visiting Hawaii are still in the back of my mind somewhere.  Foreign countries have only recently become an item of interest for me, but there is so much beauty in the USA, I haven’t seen the need to explore that yet.

I wish you success on completing your list.

Janice, you're definitely an adventurous lady.   I congratulate you on what you've already done and wish you luck in completing those you still want to do.

I've already done the skydiving, white water rafting, NASCAR driving but, could be enticed to ride that Canada-Alaska ride.   Finances would be my only hold back but, when you're planning that trip, let me know, I'll see if that's in the cards.

I might have sort of had a bucket list, once upon a time.

I have spent time in 49 of the 50 states.  Alaska, maybe but not a requirement.  One more Canadian Province but..... with the current government, that will have to wait. Been to six or seven European nations.   Spent some time on the Island of Guam.

The one place I always wanted to go.... but I don't know any more, was Australia, the Outback was something that alway intrigued me.   Maybe......

Right now, keeping the bikes operational, riding whenever I can, traveling with the wife and just enjoying the sights.

The 48 lower state ride was interesting.  We have done that ride but it was two separate rides.

been thru lower 48 states on a Valkyrie, spent a few hours riding a goldwing in Alaska. Got to ride on a helicopter, sit in the front seat of a twin engine plane, ride in a b17, did not see the movies with a date at a drive in
(well I really worked at one so that was easy)

I have always wanted to buy a ticket to both islands of New Zealand and then island hop (bora bora, tahiti etc) my way back to Hawaii after 1st stopping in Thailand

Need a full month for that trip plus the weeks in Hawaii

No desire to travel Europe, but the boss wants to do that so we will see....

And I want to fire the cannon on a sherman tank which you can do believe it or not

Never understood why people want to jump out of perfectly functioning aircraft but I admire their guts

I would rather be awake with Faith Hill. We have been to 44 countries. North and South New Zealand , Australia ,Ireland and many more. I still have not been in all 48 on the bike.

Janice and Rams , Give me a call if you want another for Canada and Alaska.  Been to both but not on the bike.

-Ride a bike to Deadhorse Alaska and dip my toe in the Arctic ocean. (As well as tour around Alaska in general)

-Live long enough to see my kids become adults and what choices (Hopefully good, but...) they make in life and see how we did raising them.

-Travel. As far and as often as humanly possible.

-See attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.

-Watch c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.

I would like to see the northern lights.  I got to see a full solar eclipse a few years ago and it nearly took my breath away.  A ride to Washington State and down the PCH and then back would be nice.  Of course, with my brother Mad6Gun.
I would also like to visit Pripyat and fully explore the Exclusion Zone.  Not a lot of people want to do this with me, but there are a few.

Thanks for the link to the map.  I'm going to do that next couple years.  Shopping for one of those small mini motor homes now, and pulling a bike.  Maybe try to see how many different bike weeks I can get to.  I'm not jumping out of a perfectly good plane either.  2funny

Me and Carolyn did three static line jumps in college. She had a malfunction on

Serk, I like this  cooldude  That was always my one top wish/goal through my 30's & 40's into my 50's...that my daughters would not only become what we tried to teach them to be, but also that the guy they decided to make a life with met our expectations as a decent person. Fortunately, these two "bucket list" items have been achieved. I have lots of things I'd like to (and will) do now that I'm retired and have the time, but the top of my list of "bucket list" items will probably always include being able to see my daughters,  sons in law, and granddaughters achieve theirs as well.

travel more like Alaska, Colorado, Utah seeing the United States.  No real interest in overseas journeys to other continents, at least not until the US is seen more so.

As said, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane will never be on my TO DO list.

skip Faith Hill,  she not looking as well as Shania Twain..... Shocked

I like that leopard dress:

https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=shania+twain+pics&fr=mcafee&type=E211US1290G0&imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2015%2F06%2Fshania_performance1a.jpg%3Fquality%3D90%26strip%3Dall%26w%3D1280#id=931&iurl=https%3A%2F%2Fbbcgossip.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2022%2F12%2Fshania-twain-wears-sheer-leopard-dress-at-peoples-choice-awards-2022-768x1152.jpg&action=click

For me, jumping out of a perfectly flying aircraft was more of a challenge to overcoming my fear of heights.   Not going to suggest it's for everyone.

Reference Shania Twain, well kind of like the NASA application I filled out.   Reaching for the stars has little to do with actually being able to reach them.  Wink As I told my wife, when I quit looking, go ahead and bury me, I've been dead for at least three days.   Doesn't matter, the love of my life knows that regardless of where I develop my appetite, I'll come home for dinner.  Smiley

Rob....Bucket List items are supposed to be something that, while a stretch for some  and perhaps difficult to achieve, are at least  plausible if one works hard at it and shows some determination, or maybe has a bit of good fortune along the way. With a bit of good fortune (item #1) and some hard work and determination (item #3), I'll concede that you have at least a plausible chance of achieving either of these items on your list. As for item #2...trust me, you have ZERO chance of that happening...we've all either seen you in person or seen your picture here on this forum  Wink

No, not really. Generally, that is the rainiest time in most of the state. I would recommend June-July. But, you will also be dealing with heaviest part of the tourist season then also. Not that it’s packed with people like SoCal or anything. But, hotel availability and prices will be an issue.

Well, that's good to hear  cooldude  You just concentrate on getting that bucket list item #3 (might need #1 to do that unless you're willing to come down a bit on square footage...I assume in Alaska?) so I can have a nice place to stay and visit on my excursions up North.

Good information, thanks but, June would be out due to INZANE for me.   Not sure about others who have indicated an interest.

Gang?   OK, a very loose definition.  There was once a group of Valkyrie riders who rode some in KY, we called ourselves the Whizzer Gang.   Had to stop frequently and take a whiz.   We blamed that on our age.  Wink

But, if a trip like this does come to fruition, you'll know about it.   It would be great if folks from all over the country were able to meet up and go for such a ride.    But then, that almost describes INZANE, just a lot shorter ride(s).

I don't see such a trip happening in 2023 for me but, 2024 is a possibility.   Would May be a good time of the year for such a trip?

I've got some things I'd like to do -

finish going to all of the lower 48 states, and Alaska. (I need to get Maine, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Nebraska,  and everything west of Kansas except Colorado and HI).

I also want to hit Canada (strictly a summer trip for me !!!!).

I may want to do some travel in Europe (Mrs wants to, so...)

However - jumping out of a perfectly good airplane went away when I went to flight school.

I’m afraid in reality my “bucket list” more resembles a “pipe dream”. Since retirement I no longer feel any peer pressure to join in on our group lotto buys. I haven’t bought a ticket in years. Brenda has though. But she would probably run off with the pool boy, and leave me behind if she won. “Sleeping” with other women is so far off in the distant past, I probably wouldn’t remember what to do. And the “cabin” is likely forever out of my reach.

BUT…… if ever Brenda wins, and lets me tag along, I will build your own room to visit anytime you wish.  Smiley

I have done some of my bucket list. Trip from Florida to Alaska  and back was one. Six weeks and 12k miles. Loved the ride through the Yukon. Going to a Super Bowl was another and I went to Number 13.  Steelers beat the Cowboys 35-31 in Miami. I have one more state to complete my ridding of all states except Hawaii. Somehow I missed Idaho, need to do that. I have long had the wish to cross the Atlantic by boat. Not some small boat but a large ship. Have looked at repositioning cruises not sure they fit what I want. Last of all I want to go through the Panama Canal. Other than those things my list includes continuing to ride as long as possible and being around to watch my 5 grandchildren grow up.   In three days I reach retirement after 33 years of teaching the future of our world. Very rewarding but glad I am done. Might have to come up with a few more items for the list.

Might have to come up with a few more items for the list.

congrats on the soon to be retirement crowd.  Your bucket list have already dones are very awesome to hear you have already done so much of them, and great ones.   ENJOY!

Well, that's good to hear  cooldude  You just concentrate on getting that bucket list item #3 (might need #1 to do that unless you're willing to come down a bit on square footage...I assume in Alaska?) so I can have a nice place to stay and visit on my excursions up North.

Smiley
Lol, let's make it easy...I know one of your lifelong (OK, maybe just your Valk Life) ambitions, right up there at the top, has been to attend a Valhalla rally. Book it...we'll be there September 8th at Johnny's in Grand Forks, BC this coming year. There ya go, that should help getting you off the snide taking care of your Bucket List items cooldude
I should forewarn you however, that Faith probably won't be able to make it to Johnny's for that week  Cry Wink

Grin I’ve been contemplating just that. My plan has been to take my Standard up this summer and leave it there to ride in the summers. Maybe I can just ride it back. Things are still in flux though. Brenda’s folks are struggling with their health a little more and more. She is becoming more reluctant to leave them for 3 months again. We’ll see.  cooldude

Shoot, just remembered something on my bucket list.
Have tried several times the last three years to get my Inlaws to go deep sea fishing with me.   Can't afford to do it by myself but, hopefully someday we'll get that one crossed off.

Hoping to cross the #1 item on my bucket list off in 2024.

Ride to the Pacific Coast and back to Ride the entire Pacific Coast Highway.

This has been on my bucket list almost since the day I learned how to ride a motorcycle.

While I'm at it I should be able to complete my goal of riding in all 48 lower states.

Take your time and stop along the way many times. Lots to see. I enjoyed every minute I did and wish I had even more time.

I liked riding the section I rode north to south so that the majority of the pull offs were to the right.
