I could see myself flying one of these. I'm of the old school that likes to see my wings stationary, having tried my hand at flying a chopper a few times never convinced me otherwise. Guess I wasn't very good at rubbing my belly and patting my head at the same time...then switching. I never logged the time, mostly because it was an experiment with a friend that was also a CFI in that type A/C. Plus, we never got more than a few feet off the ground. He used to tease me a bit by calling and asking if I wanted to take a ride, said he'd let me fly and besides...he said he could use a good laugh. He made it look so easy, I guess over 10k hrs. logged in a helicopter will do that for you. Me...my time probably didn't total more than 30 minutes spread out over a half dozen attempts.

While browsing YouTube, I ran across this video. It's not a true helicopter but sure is a beauty which seems to handle much like a fixed wing a/c. I can see one problem however, the height won't fit in my garage so I guess I'll have to pass.  Wink

That's what you call a gyro-coptor. It really is supposed to be flown like a plane.

Forget about the garage i don't think I'd fit in the cockpit.

I did wonder why there was no video of take off and landing.

For some reason, the gyrocopter always sort of intrigued me.  Limited takeoff area, if the engine fails, not real problem landing.

And kits were available.

My brother built a gyrocopter on pontoons.

On a gyrocopter, the spinning top rotor provides the lift, but you have to get some speed up to get enough lift to lift off, which is done with a pusher motor/prop (or some power is sent to the top rotor to help it pick up speed for lift).

The first few times he tried it on water, it pushed over forward (swamped).  He kept having to move the pontoons forward, until sitting still on the water, it was almost falling over backwards.  The first time he lifted off, he was over the treetops right away, and then he started to learn how to fly it.

My poor mom was there watching, having a heart attack.   Grin

They’ve been around for some time. The first one I remember was in Mad Max.

There's some kind of "enthusiasts airfield" near me. There's a fellow who has
some kind of parachute with motor on it. He floats around over my property
from time to time. I hate it  Smiley ... imagine an extra loud Harley getting revved
over and over in your back yard. Imagine when everyone who can afford
one has one of those helicopters... blegghh...

I’m more of an Airwolf kind of guy, I can’t afford one of those either.

I have had dreams of flying helicopters, it was great fun!

Powered Paragliding.

I came VERY close to pulling the trigger on a rig, might still do it if/when financial situation improves...

Can get into it for $10k-$15k, no license required, and a decently low death rate if you're not a complete moron...

This guy makes it look way too easy...

One day I was riding past the location of the "enthusiast airfield" or whatever... a guy was sailing around and
I stopped to look at him. He floated over to look at my red motorcycle...

I'm only assuming that the guy who shows up at my house every so often comes from the same place.
