ooh - WE ARE UP TO -3 AFTER GETTING DOWN TO -5 earlier today. Will probably drop to -7 or so tonight...
If you step outside right out of the shower, I doubt you can tell the difference. Weird here, it's going to hit 56 about 9PM. But 10 tomorrow nite.

Got this in an email from my homeowner insurance provider. Good advice contained therein.
Dear Rams,
We are aware of the winter weather impacting many of our members across the country. Thank you for trusting us with your insurance needs. We are here for you with tips and advice to help you prepare your property and vehicle.
Make Sure Your Home Is Ready
Here are some precautions to consider:
· Wrap exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or 2 inches of Underwriters Laboratories (UL)-listed heat tape.
· Caulk cracks and holes in the home's outer walls and foundation. Holes left by cable installation can also leave pipes exposed.
· Clear rain gutters, repair roof leaks, check your roof to make sure it can handle the extra weight of the snow and ice, and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or neighboring structure.
· Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.
· Consider buying alternative heating resources. All heaters that run on fuel (natural gas, kerosene, butane, oil) should be vented.
Make Sure Your Vehicle Is Ready
Consider the following to stay safe in a winter storm:
· Stay off the roads if possible. If trapped in your car, stay inside.
· Create an emergency supply kit for your vehicle. Include matches, a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, and a bright cloth to tie to the antenna.
· Store a small broom and a small sack of sand in your vehicle for generating traction under wheels and a set of tire chains or traction mats.
Tools to Help You Prepare
Visit our winter storm advice page for additional tools, checklists, and advice to stay safe during a winter storm. Should you need to file a claim, you can do so online. As always, we stand ready to serve you. Stay safe.
Thank you
United Services Automobile Association
Edited: Just remembered how we handled extreme cold when I was a kid, left any cabinet doors open if, there was a water pipe in that area.

Shoot, if ya go down to Florida to get the sand the rest is a waste of time.
Good Lord I wish I was there.
-13 and the wind is a blowin' here like crazy.

got it a little better than -13 out, only -3 right now and winds a howling 30+ mph.
Further north you go into MN and WI, gets tad bit colder and usually snowier. Keep the -10 below up there please.
coldest/windiest EVER experienced was Devils Lake ND ice fishing about -20 or so below zero and 30+ mph sustained winds for 3 days all day on the ice. Fish had lockjaw during that cold snap so basically drove 20+ hours in partially near whiteout conditions for nothing. Crazy sitting in a portable ice shack holding it together whipping back and forth even with ski goggles on my eyelids were freezing shut.
I heard Duluth MN and north of there got 2-3 feet of snow recently. NO thanks, that is a bit much even for me.

-32C with -44 windchill this morning….last few days it’s been below -50 with the windchill. So this ain’t bad. This was me in November during hunting season… It’s all good…we need to get the fishing shack out and now the ice is thick enough to drive on Hope all my southern friends with houses and plumbing and roads and infrastructure (and bodies) that aren’t built for this are getting by ok.

-8 now in Crossville, TN. A lot of rain before the big freeze dropping from 42 to 22 in 1 hour. If'n you're not drippin the faucets, pour a little windshield washer fluid down your shower-sink traps overnight. They will freeze up before water pipes sometimes crack, easily preventable.
I put the Soobie in the garage and covered the 4x4 one ton front half with a tarp in case I had to get out or help someone. with all the rain we had, if I let the locks and door jams freeze, I'm stuck. I also went up to the shop and brought a propane bottle/torch to the house in case I have to heat up a lock/padlock to get into a shed or my shop. Stay warm, stay safe. Merry Christmas!

I stepped out onto the upper deck and I've never felt cold like it before. Not even in a walk in freezer.
It of course rained for a short while before the cold arrived so now everything is slightly iced. Nice.

btw, 52*F and rain @ 10am.
Forecast to be 12*F tonight at 10pm.
The ponds and lakes around are just starting to freeze up.
With all this rain and forecast of single digits, I may have to find my skates and stick.

Well I'm @ -10 and constant 30 mph. wind. Biggest issue is I'm getting snow blown into the garage air via leaks so to speak. Scooped out a small cooler of snow and threw into the wind. Letting the garage warm up for awhile. Haven't been this bad since 96'. Life on the prairie and I wouldn't trade for anywhere else yet. Hopefully tomorrow will allow me to pull the 4600 tractor out and knock down the drifts. In the mean time "let it blow, let it blow, let it bloooow".

Early yesterday, Casper, Wyoming hit 42 below zero, the coldest ever recorded for that city. Last night I picked my daughter up at the Denver airport and my truck read -22.
Interestingly, -40F = -40C.

To TRULY freeze it would need to be -42, but the thing you're likely referring to is if you throw boiling water into the air at -14 or below it will basically turn into steam.. https://www.newsweek.com/cold-weather-throwing-boiling-water-air-burns-1768806

Spent 22 plus years in Southern WY. Remember a number of winters where the wind blew 40 mph for two weeks straight. Yeah, this was with temps below zero. Thats why we left the state.
WE here in Southern OR had two weeks straight of temps in single digits and high in upper 20's. Several snow events with about 16 inches of white on the ground. Power bill showed 9 degrees less average temps form last year for the month. Man has it changed. We didn't get below freezing last night and it has been raining for the last two days. The snow is slowly melting. Still have enough for a white Christmas.
Keep safe all you in the big bubble of cold.

That reminds me of the Memorial Day BBQ many VRCC members used to hold at the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari, NM. One year it had been cold and wet at home, but it was 100 when I arrived. A neighbor who rode with me said he couldn't wait to get in his air conditioned room. I said 'no way, I'm going to sit out front and enjoy this heat -- as soon as I get a six pack.'

Ski slopes where we used to live [ NYS] could make snow above 32F to close to 40F. I guess it has to do with dew point, humidity and 'wet-bulb temp'.

Parked the wife's Ridgeline yesterday, it won't even get started till this blows over. Everything I have with a motor is parked inside (except the Kubota tractor); they'll all stay there until it warms up.
That is all I have to say.

Just heard about this on the radio and found the link below. Rolling power outages in TN are coming soon. NOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Rolling blackouts began Friday for parts of East Tennessee, per power companies, as the Tennessee Valley Authority experienced high demand for electricity. Please see this story about the updates on the rolling blackouts.Earlier, some power outages have been reported in East Tennessee as winter weather moves through the region. The region is expected to experience possible flash freezing, single-digit temperatures, and strong winds, which could lead to potential power outages. WATE 6 On Your Side is monitoring power agencies’ updates as they’re made available. I have also heard reports that several coal fired power stations are down or not in service in TN. Have not looked it up. https://www.wate.com/news/top-stories/winter-weather-east-tennessee-power-outages/
