And then one broken bolt, and the weekend is shot. I decided while I was changing the air filter on the Wing, I would adjust the cruise control cable as there has always been some lag in the engagement. FSM shows the procedure and I had a cd with some video of the process. There are a couple of notches on the cruise control cable and the throttle body that need to be realigned, a simple loosen of the lock nut and turning to the cable. Problem is the notches that need to be aligned are under the air bag, radio, and air filter box. Honda in their infinite wisdom left a sight hole to view the notches in question, but on the airbag models they mounted the ecu over the sight hole. So I unplugged the ecu and got it out of the way. Still no joy because the mounting bracket for the ecu is still blocking the view. The bracket has to come off and the only issue is making sure you don’t drop any of the fasteners or they will disappear into a dark hole never to be seen again. Ok, bracket off and no dropped fasteners. 10 minutes and the cable is adjusted, yea!

Time to reassemble, only one bolt attaches the bracket to the frame. Only one or two turns from being snugged up and the head twists off! Long story short, spent hours looking to tools to get the old broken bolt out and still wound up having to use increasingly larger drill bits to just turn the old bolt into shaving and probably did not get it all out but enough to retap the the 6 mm hole out for a new bolt.

So I spent today putting everything back together and I am only a few pieces away from testing out my handiwork and having a little shakedown run before the Spring Fling. I have a new final drive installed and while doing the service work I added a Dakota Digital speed signal adjuster so that the speedometer will read correctly. It’s adjusted on the fly so that will have to wait for some decent weather.

Glad you.... probably... got it sorted...

Best $250ish I've ever spent was paying someone else to replace the air filter on my GL1800!

Edit to add - NOTHING involving getting under the Tupperware on a GL1800 is a 10 minute job... EVAR!!!!!

That’s why the plastic has been off for 3 weeks! Given this was my first foray into the inner workings of the bike and it’s now 14 years old, there is much more I could have done, but I decided to stop where I was. But since the plastic was already off, that cruise control adjustment “could” have been a 10 minute job, save for one bolt. cooldude

My first time working on my 2001 wing I had to replace a bad water pump. Removed all the plastic , gas tank , ecm ,etc......Removed and replaced  said water pump which wasn't too bad , just lining up the slotted drive on the pump was FUN ! Got everything back together and a few months later decided to replace the air filter , which (obviously ) I did not know was under all that crap...ugggghhhh ! Would have been one or two bolts away from it when it was apart for the water pump. Off comes everything ..again. At least now I can say I am very skilled at getting that thing dis-assembled ! And that's how we learn , boys and girls ..haha

Exactly, Honda had a recall on the air bags. Expensive proposition, so I went to a dealer to have mine done, they said that my recall had been done. Then after more checking I find that completed recalls were marked by dimple marks made with a punch in two different places on the bike, one being on the VIN plate on the frame. No dimple marks on mine?? I have as yet gone back to Honda on this but I will!

Major update. I put the final pieces of body work and trim back on last night! Not one extra part left over and only one plastic clip lost to the darkest recesses of the engine. I was a little surprised to find that Lowes has a nice selection of black plastic push pin type fasteners and one that filled the bill for me quite nicely.

Now it’s a waiting game for the weather to moderate enough to get my speed sensor recalibrated and the bike will be ready for the year. I on the other hand I’m dealing with what may be the most mild case of Covid ever. No different than any head cold I’ve ever had but after a while I did become very tired but that’s about over too. Come on Spring.
