Our herd of over 50 have been hanging out atop the hillside again this year, we can watch them many days from the kitchen window. They like the hilltops on these heavy snow years, as the sun melt allows for some vegetation to push through for them to chomp on. These brutal winters can be tough for them (and me), and they're about to get tougher for wildlife in the Gunnison Valley as the DOW is reintroducing wolves. Being cattle country, the ranchers are up in arms, even though they say all lost cattle will be compensated for. https://crestedbuttenews.com/2022/12/gunnison-area-chosen-as-major-wolf-reintroduction-site-for-co/This could get interesting..

pretty neat they have a few ELK herds in WI even. One is near Clam Lake WI up northwest of Park Falls WI far northern WI. The other is closer by in Black River Falls WI in Jackson and Clark county middle of WI. Been ATVing up there and never seen any but driving off the I-90 interstate, saw 2 big ELK luckily on the other side of the tall fence near woods in the open grazing about 50 yards away from the interstate. Just glad those fences are TALL and keep them from crossing the road hate to hit one of them doing 75 mph.
I could be wrong, but both areas am sure have wolves and black bears and doubt they do much to reduce the small herds we have here in WI, which is a good thing since introducing Elk back into WI is a good thing.

Exiting Rocky Mountain NP into Evergreen in the fall of 97', the Elk and the Mule deer owned the edge of town especially right at the entrance to the park. Probably much worse now.

The local elk have no fear of motorized traffic BUT a bike does make them look a little closer. I keep well away from them when riding.

Elk were introduced into Cataloochee Valley in 2000. They've done very well and the herd has gotten quite large. They definitely don't mind humans being close. This PIC of my Better Half was taken @ Cataloochee Valley in 2008. I've told many people that you can get closer to a Bull Elk there than you want to.

There's a few in the field opposite the house. No matter how many times I see them it pleases me.

wow, you got some nice BIG woods all around you for them to roam. NICE! Last year or so ago I had the chance to put a bid of a pre-fab wooden sided small ranch house (needed work for sure) with about 10 acres of land connected to OVER 100,000 acres of county forest land surrounded by wildlife galore. It was over 100K obviously, but the wife said NO. I still regret not pushing her further since although the home was nothing special, the land with neighbors about 500 yards away on each side woulda been nice. If we were pushing age 60 I think she woulda been more inclined to say YES I think and retire early.

Britman, last year when my son and I were at the Meadowlark motel, there were 3 females hanging out on their property there in town on the strip in Maggie Valley. We came off of the BRP that's right down the road and there was a bull and 2 cows up there as well about 20 feet from the road. Man, I would HATE to hit one of those beast on the Valk!

Paul, I think it would be nice if you had one of those live 24hr wildlife cameras, so that we could all enjoy your view whenever we wanted to. Good stuff...
