Anyone remember two years ago?

I remember...

No power.  No water.  No cell phone service.

That's what my wife and I woke up to.  All we had was a fire in the fireplace and a battery operated radio.

We started the day by melting snow by the fireplace to flush the toilets.  Later, the radio let us now that we were in a world of crap!  That's when I decided to go get one of my generators.  The trouble with that was that I have no clue as to how to drive in the snow.  Luckily, the computer on my Toyota Tundra knew how!  As a matter of fact, that 4X4 TRD Sport not only drove in the snow, but it actually drove great in the snow.  On the way out of the neighborhood I found that we had a downed transmission line.  The result of a pole breaking during the blizzard.

20kW generator and downed power lines...

I tied the generator into to my house's power and we were quite comfy.  Cell service was restored later that day.  We now melted snow on the electric stove to be able to flush the toilets.  Satellite TV worked and we had internet by making our cell phones hot spots.  We were also able to offer help to our neighbors.

Remember the mis-information about a fuel shortage during this time?  Yeah, thank you social media! (I had fuel to run the generator for 45 hours before re-fueling, so that bit of B.S. didn't affect us.)

It took only three more days for Pedernales Electric to replace the pole and restore power.  Internet took another week and a half.  We ended up with minor property damage that I was able to fix for $85.

Unfortunately, lot's of the folks throughout the state were not as lucky as we were.  Huge amounts of property damage and even loss of life.  All avoidable outcomes.

Anyway...Happy Valentine's y'all!

Yup... Remember it well... I used my Acura 4x4 to help friends and relatives quite a bit, ended up driving it into a ditch and kicking off the side airbags... (Visibility issue, not traction issue. Road curved, couldn't see the curve, into the ditch I went.) No injuries, USAA took good care of me, so can't complain too much.

I figure an ERCOT executive's parents must live in my neighborhood, our power never so much as blipped during the whole episode.
