That's also why our engines make less power, especially naturally aspirated ones.

You can buy canned O2 on Amazon now... I brought several with me to Pike's Peak, Mount Evans and the ridge road at Rocky Mountain National Park, and having the occasional "hit" off 'em helped me a LOT...

...although I admittedly felt a bit like President Skroob from Spaceballs...

When I was still a tech in the Navy at the time I served Military pilots went on Oxygen above 10000 feet. I remember flying off the ship off Nam and the pilot getting us up to 6 or 7000 feet to cool us off fer a bit before we got on station and also on the way back to the ship. Natural air conditioning!  cooldude Ain't nuttin better than a couple deep inhales of 100% O2 fer a hangover!  Roll Eyes And did That more times than I care to recall!  2funny RIDE SAFE.

Pressure breathing and belly breathing are your friends when going up hill and into lower pressure due to altitude.
Pressure breathing removes more carbon dioxide and belly breathing allows the use of the full capacity of your lungs.

I like hiking and mountaineering.

Part of Navy Flight training is that they put your class into a hypobaric chamber (on O2, of course), and they take you up to 25,000 feet, where you then take off your mask and you try doing "simple" things to see how you react to lack of oxygen.

Also part of that - they also explained that those who smoked (I don't remember how much, I think it was something like a pack or 2 / day) were, for all practical purposes, living at 25,000 feet . SO - for you smokers - think about that...

i was in a C130 that lost pressurization.  No little oxy masks fell down.

We were at 10K, but needed to go higher over the Taurus Mountains (Turkey).

So we turned around and went back.

I never noticed anything.

I doubt you would notice unless you were exerting physically.   10 K ASL really isn't all that high but, had you been attempting to let's say run at 10 k asl, you would have noticed the lessor O2, I can assure you of that.

Try pulling some serious G's  at 10k ASL - as bad as running... I certainly sucked up as much O2 as I could doing that - O2 mask or not..

When I was a whole lot younger, I worked at 9K to 10K.   Noticed that I walk a bit slower at the 10K.  but then I was living at 7K.   Going down to the valley once or twice a month was great, never ran out of 02 there.   2funny

Years ago I remember reading that a typical gasoline powered engine will lose about 3% of its horsepower per 1,000 feet in elevation. That sounds reasonable, as here in Colorado when I ride above 11,000 feet or so the drop in power is very noticeable.

As for myself, the loss in blood O2 levels is measurable. My house is at 6,700 feet, and when I measure my blood O2 level it usually reads about 95%. However, when I'm close to sea level it jumps to 98% or more.

cooldude Well we all know FL is pretty flat so No O2 needed. So the riding season is pretty much year round. However our abundance of squirrels do recognize the season. Don't let them screw with you.  police
