STOOOOPID.

Supposedly the rider was doing 85, girl driver was talking on phone with a friend aboard. All three killed instantly. The force of impact rolled the car.

That's a really old picture.  The email circulated with that pic four years ago claimed the Swedish rider was traveling at 155mph and made no mention of cell phones.

Once more, folks, when you see motorcycle pictures that cause you to react with a sense of intellectual superiority, do keep in mind, superior or otherwise, that you're feeling the same emotion and thinking the same thoughts that the little old woman in the cage experiences as you ride past on your Valkyrie.

Next time you find yourself tempted to use terms like stoopid, idiot, moron, or darwin award candidate; let that little voice inside remind you, "The difference between my intellectual prowess and his in the big scheme of things is likely negligible."

My little voice uses that reminder regularly and follows with "but I'm okay with that."   Smiley

I remember this pic from a while back.  As I recall, the rider was doing about 125 mph while talking on a cell phone and eating a Big Mac.  What a nu.......ice guy!   Evil

on hwy 35 along the mississippi river here in wisconsin, about 5 years ago, my boss was riding on a "flood run" when an idiot on a crotch rocket came flying up passing cycles like crazy, then avoids on coming trafic by squeezing next to my boss, then once clear, zooms off like an idiot.

a few miles down the road, my boss came up onto an accident.  seems that crotch rocket rear ended a mini van.  pushed his front wheel up to the back seat of the driver.

he and his girl friend were flown out to LaCrosse, and Rochester.  don't know if they lived.

idiots.  feel sorry for the girl.

Gary, you're a bad, bad man.   2funny

A middle aged woman in this Ford suffered a broken elbow while riding in the passenger seat and conversing with the driver.  Talk about irresponsible actions!   tickedoff

While I think banning cellphones while driving is a great idea (and something I actually agree with Oprah about WTF) these things happen even when phones aren't involved. Sometimes all a biker can do is react, and sometimes they don't get that choice.

I was sitting at a stop light minding my own business watching for the green light when I heard the squeal of locked brakes, I just instinctually moved forward and hugged the bumper in front of me. The volvo ended up stopped about where I had been sitting, luckily I had enough wiggle room to move forward. And on we rode. That's just yesterday's story. The commutes are filled with them. Most of the time it has worked out for me, but sometime it may not.

All we can do is our best.

Practice looking and leaving an escape route in those situations when stopped.....    It paid off for me many times on the Bayshore Blvd & later on I-5, & I-80 over the years.....

Like John says, leaving an out, is the best advice both while stopped and moving.

My company teaches us that when we stop behind another vehicle, that we stop far enough behind so that we can see the bottom of the rear tires, of the car in front of us.  I've been following that advice for years, and it has allowed me to 'move up', if I feel the car behind me is not paying attention.

My biggest fear, while on the bike, is being rearended while at a stop, at night.  I run the SOMA (stay off my ass) bulbs in the tail light, and in the IS trunk (when it's on the bike), and a few quick stabs of the brake lever, while a car is closing in on my stopped bike, usually gets them to stay back a comfortable distance.

Keep your head on a swivel, assume they are all out to kill us, always be ready for that driver that is looking right at you, to say he/she didn't see you...

Ride safe, and thanks for posting your pictures Willow...  Seeing you up, around, riding, and posting, makes for short memories...  It was not that long ago, that we almost lost you.

when i bought my 1st bike (kaw mach 3 1972) the saleman said to always remember the two rules.

1 everybody is out to kill you
2 the day you think your the master of that motorcycle, is the day you should sell it.
it ALLOWS you to ride it, just like a horse.

its work pretty well for me. except for that time............................ Shocked

yep

I am with you Black Dog sugarbear and BigIV some of the cagers
are out to get us and we are invisible to others  having a plan B or C
just makes sense

WHoever said "if its in back of you it dont matter " would not be around for long riding in NYC
checking your six just is self preservation, just like not riding beyond your ability
to stop if necessary

We have lost some good people to cagers. Too many and there will be more

Ride safe and often
