I want to replace my ignition/saddle bag key with a key that has the plastic on it, like my original Honda key. My local locksmith told me that I would need to either order one from Amazon/Ebay, or from Honda. I looked on Amazon, and there are two kinds: type 1 and (predictably) type 2.

Does anyone know which type the original key is?

I just bought a new key for the "Rat" bike, the first thing the parts guy at Honda did was look at my aftermarket key for what type it was.   Obviously, being an aftermarket version, it was not stamped with a number.  He took my key back behind the wall and matched it up with one and cut the key to match. So with that, I'd recommend visiting your local Honda dealer.

Thanks for that. The only problem is that my local Honda dealer shuttered its doors six months ago. I'll contact a Honda dealer somewhere and ask them directly.

All locksmiths are not equal.  Some have or can get what you want.

Thanks, everyone. I do appreciate your help, and willingness to do so.

I called a dealer, and he immediately asked me which way the key "stepped", whether right or left. I was confused, and he (more or less) patiently led me through what that means. My key is a step-left (apparently, a step DOWN on the left side of the key), according to this man, meaning that it is a type 2 key blank that I need to order.

Thanks for clearing up the "type" mystery. I have a second OEM key somewhere, but I haven't seen it in a while.
I use my OEM key and have a working non-oem key in my motorcycle jacket pocket (always take two keys with you :-) ) ...
but I'll order one of those OEM blanks...

My original OEM key is looking pretty worn, so I have only used copies for the last year or so.

Great advice about the 2 keys thing: I had my one copy with me when I went to the car wash to hose off my Valk, when it slipped out of my hand, and plopped into the soup under the carwash drain. I had to call my wife, get her to locate her copy of the key, get it to me, then listen to her give me crap about it for the next year. Yeah, a second stashed key is a good plan.
