Wife just bought a new Corolla Cross.  Finally opened the hood the other day and first thing I noticed was the recommended oil on the filler cap 0w-16.  At that viscosity it hardly seems like oil more like vegetable oil.

My understanding is that 0w16 has been being tested in Japan for about 20 years. As with so many automotive "improvements", it's all in the name of fuel economy (about 2% better than 0w20, allegedly) and "carbon footprint". As an independent Amsoil dealer, I pay attention to oil and chemicals more than some people do, and nobody thinks 0w16 is going away. We sell it:  https://www.amsoil.com/p/oe-0w-16-synthetic-motor-oil-oes/?zo=5889580

As a matter of fact, I've also heard that there has been some testing of oil in the 0w8 category. Time will tell.

I recently inherited a Hyundai Elantra.  Manual says 5-20.  Called my mechanic about it and he said to use it.

I keep in the mix. I was an amsoil dealer in the '90s, before they took the 10w40 and 20w50 motor oils and put them into bottles that said motorcycle oil and sales went to the moon Alice.
the newer type of crankshaft bearings allows such low weight oils, plus the oil chemistry is very expensive so the oil and engine can survive for a few PPT (yes trillon)  less so called pollutants.

I've received that industry magazine for yrs and that is an old out date article due to the new components used in oils today. the reasons oil is so much much more expensive today than even 5 yrs ago.

many used oil analysis results here to read.

interesting, I must be living under a rock.  never heard of 0w-16 oil.  my tundra takes 0w-20 8 qts. and pours in like water so thin.  now 0w-8 is also coming?  wow, might as well pour in colored water next?

Let us know how she likes the corolla cross.  looks like an interesting smaller vehicle to me, not my cup of tea though heard pretty small inside especially rear area.

i quit buying Amsoil oil when it started costing 12 bucks per qt. for our valkyries.   tad over 11 was my limit some years back, great oil, but not worth the cost.

speaking of oil,  is it just me, or does anyone ever put regular conventional motor oil on sale anymore?  The ON sale full synthetic oils are near the same cost of regular non sale conventional motor oil, very odd.

Not sure recommended, but I finally had to buy full synthetic 5w-20 and 5w-30 for my vehicles after over 100K miles of running regular conventional motor oils in each vehicle for 8 years now.

all of these low weight oils and pretty much all oils today are synthetic and/or blends even if doesn't state synthetic on the container, and of course if it has that word the price is more, but what's in the container is pretty much the same.

So far she loves it.  She's retired but still works night shifts part time at hospital 35 miles away in the cities.  It's already been through two snow storms and the all wheel drive does really well in the snow.  I like it because I can finally drive one of her cars without my head hitting the roof of the car.
