Ok. It’s not done but a ton of work went into this so far so I thought I would post my midway point on a airplane wing desk I was asked to design and build.

The plane was destroyed and the wing salvaged. Cut down and painted. More paint and buffing of aluminum still to go.

I started with a design for the legs. Then, a pattern. Then changes to the design by my customer. Then finally the final pattern. This is the pattern bolted on.

Next was to glue up the 8 quarter Cherry and then cut out the legs with a router

Today I did the final tweaking of the cherry legs and this is one bolted on. The top will be glass.

Very cool Jeff.   cooldude

Until the side-plate pictures, I was wondering about things rolling off onto the floor.   Grin

With a glass top, I guess the owner plans to put all kinds of things on display.

Yesterday I made progress. Router work and drilling 80 holes for the screws to attach the wing tips covers. No not all those screws are anchors, 8 are anchors and the rest I cut short so they are just decorative. Today will be 5 or 6 hours of sanding to get it ready for stain. Close to the end but it won’t be today.

That is a pretty cool project (and look at it, it is recycling and avoiding waste too!).

Can you share anything about how the plane crashed? Just got curious.

The plane didn’t crash. But it’s a wild story. So my friend parked his airplane at a little country airport. The plane was just minding its own business when a drunk driver lost control of his truck, plowed through the fence and crashed into the plane. However, it wasn’t totaled, just damaged. Then before it could get repaired a freak storm spun up a little twister that picked up the plane and slammed it down upside down.

You can’t make this stuff up. Man. The wing was the only part not twisted up to bits.

@Chris: that is crazy. I guess it was God's will that the airplane wouldn't survive in the end.

My customer is coming by in the am to choose a stain color. We’re getting close to being done.

It’s not much different from the last picture except hours of finish sanding and fitting. I suppose it will never be perfect but I am trying to get close.

Hopefully not, it would get his bike dusty.

My shop is not capable of displaying the piece at the moment. So my living room doubles as a showroom.

Please understand my comment was not intended as criticism, more an expression of sympathy.

My bikes fit in a shed, but I can't work on them in there, no room.  At least I have a sun shade.

Progress…got the staining done on the second effort. To get the color my customer wanted it needed more stain than could be applied in one session. It’s going to be awesome.

Yeah Divine Intervention without a doubt. For some reason that plane saw the end of its life without anyone getting hurt.

That is certainly a most interesting piece of furniture and great craftsmanship. The color combinations are great and the glass top finishes it off with a very nice impression. Well done and I hope it lasts a hundred years and then some.  cooldude

The glass is the heaviest part and I think all together it’s 140/150 lbs

Nice, the glass top kind of looks like the flaps are deployed.

Very nice design and great work!

It's hard for people to fathom the hours that go into some projects.

Very nice design and great work!

It's hard for people to fathom the hours that go into some projects.

So much of the time was spent on the forms. Wings are not square, parallel, straight or even. Each leg needed to be so different from each other yet look exactly the same and end up with the glass level and flat. Lots of time spent on sanding as well especially where the leg had to follow the curves of the wing.   Anyone that has prepped a car for a nice paint job know there’s sanding and there’s SANDING. this was the latter. The finish stain and lacquer was two days each to get it just right. Fit and finish ended up I’d say 95%. After 90% I think it was over two hours (an hour each leg) to get another percentage point. Overall I’m happy, it came out like I imagined and my customer was blown away. That’s always a good thing.

So yes, a simple looking piece has its hidden complications. Fortunately my customer fully appreciated that and was very patient.

I imagine slinging it up with rope off the floor at the height and orientation desired, then going about measuring and creating templates.. Just about every way you can do it is labor intensive and there are probably a dozen different ways to go about it.
I'm surprised it only took you 40 hours of work, those were hours well spent. Years ago I did some custom Oak handrails with all kinds of twists, turns and elevation changes.. It took many hours of sanding once the pieces were fitted, then many more hours of sanding to blend it all together. Then came staining and finishing, of course.. That took a long time.
Luckily I have customers who appreciate the quality of my work and they  impeccably maintain what I have done, some jobs were done 30 years ago and still look like the day I finished.

You should be proud of this one, these kinds of challenges don't come around everyday, you knocked it outta the park IMHO!
