Analysis Paralysis…
I'd decided to leisurely ride through Statesboro, GA, several times already this season on my way to the eastern Carolinas... The curious fact is a ride to the piedmont and low country of the eastern Carolinas had been my 'plan' back when the FCR had concluded over five months ago and half a dozen times since. Nothing new at all with this rather ‘looseness’ of planning as far as we’re concerned… Some of you may already know this…
Once upon a time we were in Show Low, AZ, for example… with absolutely no idea where we might wander next. After consulting the Atlas, a decision to return to nearby Utah was reached, since we hadn’t been there recently… With that good feeling we all get when a plan has finally been made and some degree of certainty has re-entered our thinking, I’d gone to the onsite lounge for a minor celebration. Upon returning to the motel room later, I checked my voicemail, and… everything changed… It turned out to be about two fun-filled years later before we finally did return to Utah!
For the last two weeks I've had that same sort of plan in mind... Each day, however, either weather, laziness, temperatures, or a seductive, irresistible invitation to visit Darrell's Diner for a brag-worthy breakfast had produced the inevitable postponement... I’ve found procrastination rather easy to do… perhaps you have, too. Why should today be any different?
Tubby and I returned the day I’d begun this post from a lavish feast of biscuits 'n gravy, so I was once again bound to hang close to the recliner for the unavoidable nap soon to overtake this occasionally drowsy sometimes rider. Maybe we'll head out in the morning, I naively wondered...?
It looked like we'd be headed west by that time instead of northeast, however, as the ever-changing forecast was by then hinting at mucho precip in that preferred direction off and on for the next week or so... with some of those predictions even suggesting some 'strong' weather could be included! Frontal boundaries and associated significant weather changes tend to drift around unexpectedly just like some serious riders, it appears.
Each morning I’d check the forecast, and one day the way appeared better for a trek to the north... The following day west looked to be a much better choice. Heck, if we kept that up, we'd never leave Ocala! The problem wasn't with the weather right here, though. Shoot, each day here the sky has been a cloudless deep cobalt blue with pleasingly mild temperatures plus mercifully low humidity and wind. Even the weather up to the Statesboro area appeared mostly quite good.
Nope, what we were fretting about attempting to do was to avoid riding into a 'rain Cul-de-sac' later and being cut off from Hattiesburg and the annual Spring Fling. Well, cut off if we didn't want to ride in rain much of the way. We could have gone either way and had only one or two lay over nights… at first. But after that, the forecast became very tricky! And so, predictably, yet another day came and went...
Two weeks after the first announcement to my hosts that we’d be riding out early ‘on the morrow’, Tubby suggested we try a different cafe this time for breakfast... and we could also combine that with a day ride! Well, if we couldn't hit the road for a serious trip, it would still at least provide some modicum of wind therapy, so, "You're on!" was the cheerful response!!! An enjoyable day, but it just wasn't the same...
I do long for the open road and distant vistas. At worst, we'll still be here a few more days, after which we'll head for Hattiesburg from here. If any sort of inspiration at all occurs on that upcoming mini trip, though, we won't be coming back to Florida for some time... And I won’t be studying the weather forecasts nearly as earnestly either, so much anxiety can be avoided… This addict desperately needs a fix!!!
